  1. Common DIY cleaning mistakes which cause mould to spread in our homes and make mould worse

One of the biggest mistakes is using bleach on porous surfaces like walls or ceilings as it only removes surface mould while feeding the spores deeper into the material. Another common mistake is dry brushing mould, which releases spores into the air and spreads the problem further.

  •  Hidden causes of mould beyond dampness, like poor airflow and habits

Poor ventilation is a major contributor, everyday habits like drying clothes indoors, keeping windows closed or blocking vents reduce airflow and trap moisture. Even cluttered spaces can restrict air circulation, creating ideal conditions for mould growth.

  • Effective, low-cost DIY prevention tips for mould

Keep air flowing by opening windows daily, using exhaust fans, and running the air conditioning’s ‘drying function’ to reduce humidity. Regularly wipe down bathroom surfaces and window sills with a vinegar and water spray (80/20 mix) as a natural mould killer – bonus tip: add a few drops of clove essential oil, as mould hates it! If moisture is a persistent issue, consider investing in a dehumidifier to keep humidity levels in check.

  • Surprising germ havens and how to disinfect them properly

Commonly missed spots like washing machine seals, air-conditioner filters, shower curtains, and window tracks are hidden breeding grounds for mould and bacteria. A regular clean with white vinegar or a mild disinfectant helps prevent build-up. Don’t forget the back of furniture pushed against walls, mould loves dark, stagnant spaces. We recommend ensuring furniture sits 10-20cm out from the wall to avoid this.

  • How to recognise when professional help is needed for mould-related health concern

If mould keeps returning despite cleaning, or if you notice musty smells, widespread patches, or household members experiencing respiratory issues, it’s time to call a professional. Mould can trigger serious health problems, especially for those with asthma or compromised immune systems.
