The famed actress gave her blessing to a Mary Poppins sequel last year, telling The Today Show, “It’s 50 years since that came out, so I think it’s time.”

The Mary Poppins sequel will reportedly take place in Depression-era London, 20 years after the events of the original story.

It’ll focus on a now-grown Michael Banks, who reunites with Mary because he needs help with his own troublesome spawn.

“It’s not a new Mary Poppins,” says director Rob Marshall, who previously worked with Emily on Into The Woods.

“This is an extension. I’m a huge fan of the original, and I’m a very good friend of Julie Andrews, and I hold it in such awe.

“There is all this new material – it was a Harry Potter of its time – and they were never turned into anything further than that adventure.”

The director also hinted that he’d love to work Julie into a cameo role if he can.

“She is a very dear friend, and if she could be involved in some way, it would be very special.”

A report says that although Emily remains firm favourite for the lead role, her involvement depends on the filming scheduling around her new arrival.

Emily, 33, next stars with Chris Hemsworth in The Huntsman: Winter’s War, which is set for release in Australia on April 22, 2016.
