As a former style editor and cookbook collaborator who began her career behind the scenes on MasterChef Australia, Kirsten Jenkins knows a thing or two about hosting a brilliant bash. Here, the renowned food stylist shares her top five tips for Aussies to level up their styling game. And, host the perfect Mother’s Day lunch.

1. Host with confidence and use what you have

According to  Kirsten, you don’t need a Pinterest-perfect table to throw a memorable Mother’s Day gathering. Instead, her advice is to work with what you’ve got. That includes mismatched plates, everyday glassware, and simple linens can still look beautiful when styled thoughtfully. Don’t be afraid of not having the ‘right’ things and be empowered to entertain without feeling like you need to buy everything new.

2. Go big with family-style sharing

Skip the tiny individual plates and lean into the shared table trend. Big, generous platters of food look amazing down the centre of the table and make guests feel instantly welcome. Whether it’s a roast chicken or a whole grilled fish, let your main protein shine as the centrepiece. And don’t be afraid to chat with your butcher or fishmonger – they’ll point you in the right direction.

3. Get organised (so you can actually enjoy the day)

The secret to stress-free hosting? Prep ahead. The more organised you are, the more time you’ll actually spend with your guests. Think about what dishes can be prepped early – marinate proteins ahead of time, pre-chop veggies or build a salad base to dress later. Then all you have to do is plate and serve when everyone arrives.

4. Set the scene with a simple colour palette

Choosing a colour palette is one of the easiest ways to create a cohesive, relaxed vibe. Pick a colour palette or theme and go with it, it will instantly elevate the space. Earthy tones like terracotta, rust, and warm neutrals are perfect for an autumnal Australian table.

5. Add softness with edible styling

For that finishing touch, bring some softness to the table using herbs, foliage, or seasonal produce (extra points if you use an ingredient you’re already cooking with in the kitchen). Think a sprig of rosemary on each place setting, or thyme tucked into a cheese board – these little moments add texture, colour, and aroma to your spread.

Kirsten will be sharing all of her styling tips and expertise at Food + Hospitality Week at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) on 18-20 May.
