Woolworths launched their new ‘Discovery Garden’ this month with the aim of encouraging Aussies to grow their own fresh vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

Starting this week, customers who spend at least $30 on their shop (online or in-store) will be able to collect a ‘seedling kit’. There are 24 varieties of herbs, vegetables, and flowers to collect, including: thyme, basil, spinach, carrots, and many more.

New research has indicated that not only do Aussies want to eat fresh food, but they also want to grow it. In fact, 90% of parents believe that education on fresh food should be just as important as core subjects of Maths, English and Science, and yet most parents also believe that their kids are not educated enough on the matter.

Growing your own food can greatly benefit our eating habits, as well as mental health, because the first step to feeling good is making sure you’re eating the right things.

To make this whole process easier, Woolworths has integrated Google Home. All customers have to do is say “talk to Woolies”, allow your Google Home to link your Woolworths account, and then talk to ‘Olive’ who will answer questions about the program. If ever there were a way to educate and interest kids on the subject, this is definitely the way to do it.

You can ask questions like “How often should I water my beetroot?” or “When should I harvest my kale?”, and Olive can also add things to your shopping list if ever you need to. It’s super helpful and generally just fun. Check out a short clip below to get an idea of how it works.

By actively getting their hands dirty to grow fruit, vegetables and herbs, Woolworths is empowering the next generation of Australians to create their own living garden at home or at school.” says Landcare Australia CEO, Dr Shane Norrish

Customers are also given extra incentive, with every $15 dollars spent on fruit and veg as part of a $30 or more in-store shop giving them a bonus seedling kit.

The Woolworths Discovery Garden collector tray* is available for purchase at $4. Check out https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/discover/shopping-online/google-assistant for more details on the program and Olive.
