Everyone needs a friend like Margie Warrell. She’s someone who can embolden you with the confidence we all need to achieve our full potential and can impart the tools to be brave and dare to be daring.

Her own life is one of being fearless, too.

She can wax lyrical about exploring remote destinations, swimming with Piranhas in the Amazon and climbing Kilimanjaro with her four kids and spent time living in Papua New Guinea.

So she is perfectly positioned to give you the assurance you need when your self-esteem is low or when you suffer from anxiety that will help you to breathe in confidence and expel self-doubt because, well, You’ve Got This.

In her latest book, Margie has compiled a detailed account of how to be the best person you can possibly be with easy to digest words of wisdom that will open your eyes to a new mindset to help reshape your life.

We took a look at some of the fabulous quotes Margie used to illustrate examples of great attitudes from a range of amazing people. Sadly, she said she wasn’t able to use all the incredible quotes because of copyright laws that you either need to quote someone 75 years after they deceased or have their written permission to publish their quotes. Here are my favourite quotes from Margie’s book ‘You’ve Got This’ and below are her comments about what the words of wisdom mean to her in the context of her book.

‘As soon as you trust yourself, you will know how to live‘

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Margie: To me, this quote is the heart of what the book is about. Trusting in yourself is trusting in our innate capacity. As soon as we have the trust in ourself, it is profoundly liberating. It evaporates the anxiety about what is coming. What if my kids don’t turn out right? What if I lose money? Whether today or next year, being able to trust ourselves to know what is coming frees us to pursue bigger things, go after goals. I see people who won’t change their career, so they don’t do the very thing they want to do. Fear occupies the driver’s seat. Fear holds us hostage. Having faith in ourself is the opposite to that…

‘If I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning‘

Mahatma Gandhi

Margie: Don’t wait to be confident in your ability to do something. Action comes first then if you dare to do the thing you don’t think you can do it. By taking action and defying fears we grow our competency. Act first, believe second.

It’s a truism. There is a lot research in my book about this… we build confidence by taking the actions that would engender our confidence. That’s why it takes courage. It’ in the doing …

‘We must dare and dare again and go on daring‘

Georges Jacques Danton

Margie: Another quote I love is by Helen Keller. She said: ‘Life is a daring adventure or nothing at all.’

The idea is when we embrace life as an adventure it is ours for the making. Don’t try to control all the factors. Embrace all the uncertainties … dare to pursue your vision and start that business. There’s so much power in the daring.

‘A moment of self-compassion can change your entire day. A string of such moments can change your life’

Christopher Germer

Margie: This is less about kindness to others but it is a product of that. It’s about being kinder to yourself. Many of us, particularly women, are our own harshest critics. We women are tough on ourself. We set the bar too high. We’re always feeling like we are coming up a bit short or are not smart enough. Self compassion and embracing our own humanity and being kinder to ourself. That’s what it’s about.

Also be kind to ourself throughout our day. When someone says something hurtful instead of reacting by thinking I shouldn’t be hurt. Think, I’m human and realise what they said hurt me. Think, I know it’s going to hurt but .. feel the feeling. Move through it rather than get stuck in it.

When we are kinder to ourselves, we can be more daring.

‘We women hold ourselves back. We think we aren’t experienced enough when in fact we are.’

Kathy Calvin

Margie: Not just women suffer from imposter syndrome, men do too. But women struggle more with it. It’s more prevalent among women. We sell ourself short and underestimate our own ability and then hold ourself back because we are afraid. Trust yourself that you can figure it out as you go along. You will learn as you go along.

‘If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together’

African proverb

Margie: We can do so much more than we can ever do alone and we are braver too if we are doing it with someone. Succeeding in life is not a solo endeavour.

It’s important to have a rich network to lift you up and lift you as you climb. And remember to bring others with you. It’s not a zero sum game. We’re all better off when we lift each other up.

With women’s sense of competition, it stops us from doing that. Be someone that elevates others around you. Intentionally, go out of your way to do that.
