Amber Scott is one of the Australian Ballet’s most beloved dancers. Born and raised in Brisbane, she moved to Melbourne at age 11 to join the prestigious Australian Ballet School, setting the stage for a remarkable 22‑year career with the company, which she joined in 2001.

Her love of ballet began even earlier, at age four, when her parents took her to her first Swan Lake. Captivated, she waved her arms excitedly in her seat—a glimpse of the passion and artistry that would define her life.

A Stellar Career on Stage

Amber’s rise through the ranks was swift, a reflection of her classic lines, perfect technique, and artistic brilliance. She was promoted to Principal Artist within a decade, dancing iconic roles including:

Critics praised her precision and her mastery of complex choreography. Career highlights include touring Swan Lake internationally (Paris, Manchester, Tokyo, Nagoya) and performing at prestigious events like the Fall for Dance Festival in New York and Stuttgart Ballet’s 50th anniversary gala.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to have danced so many roles and toured the world. Each performance was a chance to tell a story and connect with audiences,” Amber says.

Amber also embraced fashion and style off-stage, forming close ties with designers such as Lover and Toni Maticevski, and showcasing pearls from Paspaley. Her beauty regime remains disciplined, with a focus on skincare—moisturise, moisturise, moisturise—even on rare days off.

A New Chapter: Mentorship and Teaching

Amber retired in 2023, closing a legendary chapter as a principal artist. But retirement hasn’t slowed her down. She is now dedicated to teaching, mentoring, and inspiring the next generation of dancers.

  • Classical tutor at the New Zealand School of Dance

  • Guest teacher at the Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB)

  • Guest teacher at the Dance North Academy Summer Intensive 2025 in Sydney

“Transitioning from performing to teaching has been incredibly rewarding. It’s a new way to share my love for ballet and help young dancers reach their potential,” Amber explains.

Her journey reflects a natural evolution for elite performers—using experience, technical skill, and artistry to guide and inspire others.

Life Beyond the Stage

Amber balances her professional life with her family, including husband Ty King‑Wall, now Artistic Director of RNZB, and their two daughters. Her continued involvement in dance, combined with her interest in fashion and wellness, demonstrates how a life in ballet can blend artistry, personal style, and family life seamlessly.

3 Lessons from Amber Scott

  1. Passion drives success: Early love for ballet shaped her career and continues to guide her teaching.

  2. Embrace transitions: Retirement is not the end—it can be the start of a rewarding new chapter.

  3. Mentorship matters: Sharing expertise and experience shapes the future of any field.

Amber Scott’s journey is a testament to dedication, artistry, and giving back. While she may no longer perform on the world’s stages, her influence continues to resonate through every student she teaches and every aspiring dancer she inspires.
