Even though the temperature has dropped, your sunglasses shouldn’t be hibernating at the back of a drawer.

Winter sun can be just as harsh on your eyes as summer glare, especially when it’s reflecting off water, glass buildings or even snow for those lucky enough to be heading to the slopes.

But beyond the practical benefits, sunglasses might also be the easiest way to breathe new life into a wardrobe that suddenly consists of little more than black coats, chunky knits and your favourite pair of boots.

They’re also the one accessory that seamlessly travels between hemispheres. Whether you’re layering up for a Sydney morning or escaping to a European summer, the right pair of frames instantly makes every outfit feel more intentional.

According to Zack Moscot, product designer for the iconic New York eyewear house Moscot, that’s exactly why eyewear is becoming more personal than ever.

“We’re seeing a return to expressive individuality,” he says. “Frames are becoming bolder without losing wearability.”

Instead of chasing fleeting trends, the next generation of sunglasses is all about investing in pieces that feel timeless while still expressing personality. Here are the biggest shifts shaping the eyewear you’ll be reaching for this winter – and well beyond.

Rich Colours Are Replacing Basic Black

Black frames will always have a place in every wardrobe, but this season’s most sophisticated sunglasses embrace richer, more unexpected tones.

Think deep forest greens, navy blues, warm honey acetates and soft rose-metal finishes that complement winter’s earthy colour palette while feeling equally at home against crisp white linen on a European holiday.

Rather than shouting for attention, these shades quietly elevate even the simplest outfit.

Quiet Luxury Starts With Craftsmanship

The quiet luxury movement hasn’t disappeared – it’s simply become more refined.

Instead of oversized logos, premium eyewear is increasingly defined by craftsmanship, heritage and thoughtful design.

For Moscot, whose family’s eyewear business spans more than a century, true luxury comes from what you can’t immediately see.

“Our fans know they’re wearing a piece of family, New York City and more than 100 years of optical expertise,” he says. “It’s about what the frame represents to the wearer, not a logo.”

It’s the same philosophy that’s influencing fashion more broadly: buy less, choose better and invest in pieces you’ll still love years from now.

Personality Is Back

Minimalist wire frames may have dominated recent seasons, but fashion is beginning to embrace individuality again.

Expect rounded silhouettes, geometric shapes, updated aviators and oversized acetates to continue gaining momentum. The common thread isn’t one particular trend, but rather choosing frames that reflect your own style.

“The wearer should wear the frames,” Moscot says. “The frames shouldn’t wear the person.”

It’s a refreshing shift away from trend-led dressing towards accessories that genuinely feel like an extension of who you are.

The Most Sustainable Sunglasses Are the Ones You Keep

As sustainability becomes a bigger consideration across fashion, longevity is emerging as luxury’s newest currency.

Rather than producing eyewear that’s designed for a single season, brands are focusing on premium acetates, lightweight titanium and thoughtful construction that stands the test of time.

“I like to say Moscot frames are sustainable by design,” Moscot explains. “It speaks to quality, craftsmanship and the ability to wear a pair of glasses for years to come.”

It’s a reminder that the most sustainable purchase is often the one you won’t feel the need to replace next year.

Whether you’re wearing them to soften the winter glare on your morning commute, styling them with your favourite camel coat or packing them for a long-awaited Euro summer, sunglasses have quietly become one of the hardest-working accessories in any wardrobe.

And, even though they may only take up a small portion of your outfit, the right pair of sunglasses has the power to transform everything. A simple white T-shirt suddenly feels Parisian. An oversized blazer becomes editorial. Even your airport outfit looks intentionally curated rather than hastily assembled.
