The Verdict Is In: This is 2026’s Most Coveted Engagement Ring Shape

Every year, a handful of engagement ring shapes fight for the spotlight. There’s the perennial return of vintage-inspired halos, the occasional flirtation with coloured stones, the cushion cut’s stubborn refusal to disappear entirely. Most of these moments come and go within a season or two, tracked more by Pinterest boards than by anything that actually shows up on a hand. But since 2020, one shape has pulled decisively ahead of the rest, and it hasn’t loosened its grip since.

Oval, pear, radiant, marquise – the elongated cuts now dominate engagement ring searches and in-store consultations alike, and the runners-up aren’t especially close. What sets this moment apart from the usual churn of jewellery trends is its staying power. This isn’t a single viral ring or a celebrity moment that fades from search interest within weeks. It’s a preference that has held steady, deepened, and spread across price points and cities for the better part of five years – the kind of longevity that turns a passing look into something closer to a redefinition of the classic.

It’s a shift that’s been building steadily across the 2020s rather than arriving overnight, which may be why it’s stuck. Recent high-profile engagements – including those of Selena Gomez and Madison Beer – track with what the industry data has already made clear: this isn’t a season, it’s a settled preference.

“Elongated shapes are where all the momentum is right now,” says Lauren Sommer, founder of Moi Moi Fine Jewellery, who has watched the shift play out across thousands of consultations. “Oval, pear and radiant are our best sellers, with marquise coming in strong.”

The appeal is part optics, part sentiment. “They flatter the finger, they make a stone look bigger than its actual carat weight, and they still read as classic rather than trend-driven – exactly the balance couples are after.”

Round remains the traditional benchmark, the shape most of us still picture when we close our eyes and think “engagement ring.” But oval and marquise cuts do something round can’t – they lengthen the finger and inflate the stone’s apparent size, without giving up the timeless quality couples still want when they say yes. It’s a small geometric trick with an outsized emotional payoff, which may be exactly why it’s taken hold so completely.

What’s notable is how little the shift has to do with novelty for novelty’s sake. Elongated cuts aren’t reinventing what an engagement ring should look like – they’re refining it, working within a familiar visual language while quietly changing the proportions. That may be the real story of the trend: not a rejection of tradition, but a more considered version of it.
