If your skin gets hangry halfway through the day, it might be time to join the latest skin care craze that’s taking over our desks, handbags, and TikTok feeds: skin snacking. Because, much like raiding the pantry for a little pick-me-up, a growing number of complexions also want in on a mid-afternoon treat … as they struggle to settle for just a once-a-day cleanse and moisturise!

“Skin snacking, also known as ‘beauty snacking,’ is a self-care trend that incorporates quick, effective skin care treatments into daily routines,” explains Rohan Widdison, CEO of New Laboratories, a leading beauty and cosmetics manufacturer. “It delivers long-term results without requiring lengthy morning and evening regimens or harsh treatments.”

Think of it as giving your skin a sip of hydration here, a nibble of nourishment there. All without the full-course facial. From misting your face between meetings to patting on a hydrating serum before school pickup, skin snacking is all about keeping your complexion quenched, calm and camera-ready, 24/7.

In an uncanny (although lower calorie) comparison to your favourite 3pm foods, skin snacking is portable, fuss-free and strangely addictive. “Much like casually enjoying snacks throughout the day, whether at your desk or lounging at home, skin snacking is a relaxed, minimal-effort approach to achieving great skin,” says Rohan.

The trend’s roots are as nourishing as the products themselves. Skin snacking draws inspiration from K-beauty principles – the queens of skin care layering. And, swaps out heavy, harsh chemicals for lightweight hydration and barrier-boosting ingredients. “It gained traction primarily through TikTok and Instagram,” Rohan says. “The appeal lies in its visually engaging yet highly relatable nature.”

While we once bathed in 10-step routines before bed, consumers are now saying “so long” to skin care that takes longer than making a lasagne. Instead, we’re embracing on-the-go glow-ups. “Skin snacking caters to busy individuals who no longer have the time or budget for multi-step routines,” Rohan adds. “Much like brushing your teeth without a second thought, skin snacking turns skin care into an effortless daily habit.”

The best beauty bites? Mists, masks and moisturers feature on any good skin snacking menu. “Popular choices include facial mists, hand creams, under-eye patches, sheet masks, serums, and sunscreens,” he says. All lightweight, easy to apply and perfect for sneaky skin care sessions between emails.

What’s more, the beauty brains behind the trend are cooking up some pretty innovative formulations. “Two emerging categories include microbiome-based skin care and biomimetic skin care,” Rohan says. Translation: your skin’s barrier and its friendly bacteria are finally getting the VIP treatment. “Together, they enhance skin resilience, making them ideal for sensitive, compromised, or aging skin.”

Of course, every snack has its serving size — and more isn’t always more. “Frequent product use, especially on the face and mouth area, can introduce bacteria, potentially leading to breakouts or irritation,” warns Rohan. His advice? Clean hands, breathable products, and mists for a mess-free top-up. And maybe don’t go layering 10 products at once — even your skin can feel bloated.

So, if your skin’s been sending out SOS signals by 3pm, it might be time to stash a serum in your tote, pop a mist in your car, or treat your cheeks to a hydrating balm while bingeing Netflix. With skin snacking, a dewy, healthy glow is always within arm’s reach. No reservation required.
