Either way, inviting a photographer into the most intimate moment of your life is a weighty decision, but as photographer Deanna Gerlach discovers, a personal and professional beauty can come of such a moment in a very memorable and touching way.

“Tremendously exciting and terrifying all at once” is the way Deanna recalls her first birth shoot with new parents-to-be Rebecca and Nick. Deanna was erring on apprehensive about being invited into such an intensely personal moment between husband and wife. But, as she eased herself into the background of the birthing suite, she began to relax into the journey.

The experience was extra special for Deanna, saying ‘I had laboured in that very room with my second child and had a similar birthing experience to Rebecca with my first. The first few hours I was very much in the background. But as the journey wore on Rebecca and Nick invited me in more and more.”
