Can You Stretch Your Way To Better Sleep?

Falling asleep can sometimes feel as elusive as squeezing in a good workout. But what if there was a solution that addressed both? Samantha Ross and Molly Milsom from StretchLab Black Rock reveal how a simple, gentle practice like stretching could help you find that much-needed rest.

The power of stretching

According to Samantha and Molly, stretching offers more than just physical benefits. It’s a holistic practice that impacts both body and mind. “By focusing on the act of stretching, you allow yourself to momentarily disconnect from the stressors of daily life. This shift in focus can be incredibly calming. When you stretch, you target areas of your body where tension tends to accumulate. This not only relaxes your muscles but also soothes your mind, creating an ideal environment for sleep,” they say.

How does stretching affect your sleep?

The science behind stretching’s impact on sleep is rooted in its ability to reduce stress and promote relaxation. Stretching stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps lower heart rate and blood pressure, preparing the body for rest. This process can enhance the quality of REM sleep, where your brain processes emotions and consolidates learning. Additionally, by increasing serotonin levels, stretching contributes to a better mood and overall sense of well-being, further supporting restful sleep.

A simple stretching routine

For those seeking to improve their sleep, Samantha and Milly suggest incorporating a gentle stretching routine before bed can be highly effective. “Simple stretches, such as neck stretches, leg stretches while lying on your back, and Child’s Pose, can release accumulated tension and help ease you into a more relaxed state. Aiming to stretch 30 minutes before bedtime is generally recommended, as this gives your body adequate time to unwind and prepare for sleep,” they say.

Ultimately, stretching is not just a physical activity but a mindfulness practice that encourages you to focus on the present moment. This mental shift can be just as beneficial as the physical release of tension, making stretching a powerful tool for enhancing sleep quality. Incorporating stretching into your nightly routine can be a simple yet effective way to improve your sleep. By creating a calming ritual and addressing both physical and mental tension, you set the stage for a more restful night.
