Struggling to separate fact from fiction? One would think that with the advance of the internet all the old-school beauty myths would have been put quietly to rest.

Myth 1: There’s a magic cream that will get rid of cellulite

Ah, if only. I hate to bear the bearer of bad news but there is absolutely nothing that can be done to permanently eliminate cellulite – not even liposuction. Cellulite consists of fat deposits that get trapped between the fibrous bands connecting the skin’s tissues. The bands under the skin squeeze the fat, resulting in a lumpy texture. Unfortunately it comes down to the luck of genetics whether you end up with cellulite or not. Cellulite does not discriminate between the fat or thin. You can however temporarily reduce the orange peel like appearance by using a moisturiser or self-tanner to smooth the skin.

Myth 2: Brushing your hair 100 times a day will make it perfect

Turns out Marcia Brady had it all wrong – brushing your hair that much will do more harm than good. If you tug on it too much your hair will eventually break. Gentle brushing is what will really make your hair shine. This helps distributes the natural oils from your scalp all the way down the hair shaft. Light brushing also stimulates blood flow to the scalp which nourishes the hair follicles and keeps your hair looking healthy.

Myth 3: Never pluck a grey hair, because 10 more hairs will come to its funeral

Another crazy myth and one which you probably ignored the moment the first few greys cropped up on your head.  Another ten new grey hair follicles could not possibly spout from the one same spot! The only thing that will definitively get rid of the grey is a trip to the colourist.

Myth 4: Chocolate causes pimples

One of the biggest beauty myths is that chocolate (and fried food) causes acne. Extensive research shows this is simply not true. It may however be the dairy in milk chocolate that exacerbates acne as dairy products in general (not just chocolate) has the potential to flare up acne if you are sensitive to dairy.

In a nutshell, if you already have a pimple problem, do your best to maintain a healthy diet and steer clear of junk food. Also keep in mind that the main causes of acne have been identified as the following: hormones, hereditary, overactive oil glands and dead skin cells that lodge in skin pores. Yup, that’s right. Chocolate was nowhere on the list.

Myth 5: Hair grows faster in summer than in winter

Although studies have shown that men’s beards do grow faster in summer, there is no evidence to suggest that the hair on your pretty little head does too. The only time a female’s hair has been proven to grow faster is during pregnancy, thanks to increased hormones.
