As the clock strikes 8:30 PM on a Saturday evening, cities around the globe plunge into darkness, marking Earth Hour 2024. This annual event, born in Sydney in 2007, and initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), has since gained millions of supporters all over the world since its inception. And, encourages individuals and communities to switch off non-essential lights for one hour as a symbolic gesture of solidarity to raising awareness of the impacts of climate change and the importance of biodiversity in the fight against climate change. But, what can you do during this hour of darkness? Here are seven sustainable activities to make the most of Earth Hour 2024!

Stargazing

With the city lights dimmed, take advantage of the reduced light pollution to gaze upon the twinkling stars above. Whether you’re an amateur astronomer or simply appreciate the beauty of the night sky, Earth Hour offers a perfect opportunity to marvel at the cosmos.

Candlelight dinner

Embrace the romance of Earth Hour by indulging in a candlelit dinner with friends or loved ones. Prepare a delicious meal using sustainable and locally sourced ingredients. And, savour each bite in the warm glow of flickering flames.

Outdoor picnic

Pack some snacks and blankets, and head to a nearby park for an Earth Hour picnic under the stars. Breathe in the fresh air, listen to the rustle of leaves, and appreciate the simple pleasures of nature while surrounded by darkness.

Meditation and reflection

Use the tranquility of Earth Hour to connect with yourself and the planet. Meditate, reflect on your relationship with the Earth, and set intentions for environmental stewardship. Alternatively, try a starlit yoga session, practicing yoga or tai chi outdoors under the night sky amidst the soothing sounds of nature.

Energy-saving challenge

Finally, Challenge yourself to reduce your energy consumption to the lowest possible level during Earth Hour. Turn off appliances, unplug electronics, and brainstorm ideas for long-term sustainability in your daily life. Combine it with the Earth Hour Challenge60 and do it outdoors.
