As the clock strikes 8:30 PM on a Saturday evening, cities around the globe plunge into darkness, marking Earth Hour 2024. This annual event, born in Sydney in 2007, and initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), has since gained millions of supporters all over the world since its inception. And, encourages individuals and communities to switch off non-essential lights for one hour as a symbolic gesture of solidarity to raising awareness of the impacts of climate change and the importance of biodiversity in the fight against climate change. But, what can you do during this hour of darkness? Here are seven sustainable activities to make the most of Earth Hour 2024!

Stargazing

With the city lights dimmed, take advantage of the reduced light pollution to gaze upon the twinkling stars above. Whether you’re an amateur astronomer or simply appreciate the beauty of the night sky, Earth Hour offers a perfect opportunity to marvel at the cosmos.

Candlelight dinner

Embrace the romance of Earth Hour by indulging in a candlelit dinner with friends or loved ones. Prepare a delicious meal using sustainable and locally sourced ingredients. And, savour each bite in the warm glow of flickering flames.

Storytelling session

Gather around with friends or family and immerse yourselves in the art of storytelling. Share tales, poems, or stories by candlelight, letting your imagination roam free as you create an intimate and magical atmosphere.

Energy-saving challenge

Finally, Challenge yourself to reduce your energy consumption to the lowest possible level during Earth Hour. Turn off appliances, unplug electronics, and brainstorm ideas for long-term sustainability in your daily life. Combine it with the Earth Hour Challenge60 and do it outdoors. The challenge is designed to encouraging Aussies to get outside for 60 minutes a day in a and raise funds for the tracking and protecting of whales on their ‘superhighways.’

As Earth Hour draws to a close and the lights gradually come back on, take a moment to reflect on the impact of your actions. Remember, the choices we make today can shape the future of our planet for generations to come.
