Red-Faced After A Laser Treatment? Here’s What You Should Do.

DO – Avoid The Sun

It’s a no-brainer to avoid direct sun contact straight after your laser treatment, as your natural skin barrier is temporarily weakened by the entire process.

“Sunscreen use is essential as your skin is most sensitive,” says Iola Ciavarra, National Trainer of Obagi Medical Skincare. “Look for a zinc oxide based formula of SPF30+ and above to protect your skin from the harsh sun rays.”

“A high-protection sunscreen will also help with skin healing reduce redness, but make sure you adhere to your medical skin practitioner’s advice when it comes to returning to your normal skin routine after a laser treatment.”

DON’T – Exfoliate

When your skin is feeling hot and sensitive, the last thing you want to do is to aggravate even further.

“Avoid exfoliating or applying active skin products containing ingredients such as AHAs or retinoids for about a week after the treatment,” continues Ciavarra.

DO – Look After Your Skin

Calming ingredients such as chamomile and allantoin can assist in restoring the skin’s natural barrier function and potentially reduce peeling that some people experience after a laser treatment. Moisturising agents such as Shea Butter and Avocado oil also work well to prevent over-drying of sensitised skin and work wonders to restore skin health post treatment. Try Obagi Hydrate Luxe, $79.95

“If your skin is irritated or broken after more intense laser treatments, keep your skin clean to avoid breakouts with a mild cleanser and a fresh pillowcase at night,” continues Ciavarra.

DON’T – Eat Badly

Who knew that your diet had such an impact on your skin as well?

“If your skin is very sensitive and irritated after laser treatment, avoiding common skin stimulators like red wine and spicy foods can help too – at least until redness has subsided,” finishes Ciavarra.
