How To Look After Red Hair

From flaming red locks to burnished strawberry blonde – we bring you the top tips on looking after this beautiful hair colour.

“It’s really important to use the right colour-protecting shampoo and conditioner to specifically cater to the hair colour, and address its unique fading,” says leading international hairstylist Harry Josh. Try John Frieda Radiant Red Shampoo and Conditioner, $15.99 each

Dyed or coloured hair is always the most susceptible to breakage and dryness. To maintain healthy-looking hair, use a nourishing leave-in treatment to soften tresses. Pureology has one in their range that even contains special ingredients that encourage greater colour retention for red or copper colours. Try Pureology Reviving Red Caring Oil, $49.95

Red hair can take hours to achieve at the salon – it’d be a waste for it to fade out within the first few weeks. “To maintain the colour, use an at-home hair gloss that’ll restore vibrancy and tonality between salon appointments,” continues Josh. “It also helps counteract fading and neutralises colour change.”  Try John Frieda Color Refreshing Gloss For Warm Reds, $16.99

“Other than that, I’d recommend a visit to the hairdressers for a top up of colour every 4-6 weeks,” says Josh. “If you’re exposed to the sun or heat-styling and washing a lot, it may be a shorter time, as these contribute to fading.”

However, if you’re in-between salon visits and just want to hide your regrowth, a quick spritz of Oribe’s cover-up spray will hide unsightly roots or greys in an instant. Try Oribe Airbrush Root Touch Up Spray in Red, $42
