She certainly deserved an award for her red carpet look on Oscars night and so we asked Miranda Kerr’s hairstylist, David Keough, to show us how he gave her that sultry side-swept red-carpet ‘do.

‘Dance Academy’ actress Dena Kaplan put her hand up to be our model for the day and our very own Beauty expert and Photographer Glenn Nutley caught all the action through his stills camera lens.

So today we are here with David Keough who is the Australian creative Consultant of John Frieda now here in Hollywood working with some of the biggest names in the industry like Miranda Kerr and Alyssa Milano. We are here today with our beautiful actress Dena Kaplan and David is going to be creating a beautiful hair style on her today. David what are we doing?

David: Okay so today, I’m going to recreate the ahh look I gave Miranda Kerr for the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. I would call it my modern Rita Hayworth this morning

Glenn: Perfect, thats one of my favourite looks and I’m going to let you get to it.

David: Thank you, as you can see we have just given Dena a beautiful blow out to get the process started cause you wont want to be watching it blow dry all the time. So the next step is going to be section then I’m going to take you through the step process of curling the hair. I tent to just put the hair in then wind it to the scalp. Just keep my hand in there to hold it like that. A really good tip is to make sure you have got all your stuff in front of you, all your pins, all your brushes, all your tones, all your curling irons, because the last thing you want to be doing is reaching to grab something when you got a curling iron in your hair, it just become annoying.

Dena: David why do you use the curling tong instead of hot rollers for this look ?

David: I use the curling iron with this look because i have bit more control with the heat and everything and i can leave the ends little bit so they aren’t so perfect. With the hot rollers, you get more of a full curl and you don’t seem to have as much control. I also like to mix up the sizes of the curling iron like I would class this a 3 quarter inch barrel and the other one I use is like a 1 and half inch, just sort of mixes up and you get more of a, I guess you would call it an uneven curl, just doesn’t look as precise. As you can see my sections aren’t precise, they’re like not one or the other, they’re not like perfection, just playing around here.

Glenn: So David whats the point of having it all pinned up?

David: The reason behind it all being pinned up is to keep the curl formed and shaped sort of like a hot roller. It needs to cool down in its place and let it set. The next step is basically pull all the pins, pull all the curls out and just going to brush it out. Give it a really good brush out. So now I have taken all the pins out of Dena’s hair, giving it a really good brush out and you will see the end result.

Dena: It doesn’t matter what brush you use?

David: Ahh just need to use a really good paddle brush or a Mason Pierce Brush. Just something soft on the cuticle. Not something sort of plastically thats going to damage the hair. I’m not looking for particular volume at the top, I’m keeping it quite flat.

Dena: I think I would fall asleep before the Oscar Party If you did that to me.

David: Yeah well, Miranda tends to like the head massage. So there are a couple of different ways you can play with this. I sometimes go back over with the curling iron if I wanted bit more wave here, or over here. As you can see as you brush it you can acutely keep it really formed just creating a beautiful wave like that.

Glenn: Well David, Dena looks absolutely beautiful, you have done an amazing job.

David: Thank you, thank you

Glenn: And it’s always so amazing and interesting to see that we often use techniques to create the same look and thats one of the fun parts of doing these at The Carousel. I get to learn different techniques my peers all the time!

David: It’s great, I think we all have our own style and we are always learning.
