The unstoppable power of social media to bring a brand to its knees has once again been hash-tagged into the spotlight with #boycottdolceandgabbana picking up some serious social momentum and celebrity bandwagon hopping. The design duo landed themselves in some serious social media hot water after a series of very insensitive comments about families with same-sex parents and IVF – and unsurprisingly, the social sphere has exploded.

The world of social media has rallied against Domenic Dolce and Stefano Gabbana and their eponymous label D&G after they told Italy’s Panorama magazine that in their opinions, “the only family is the traditional one” and that they “oppose gay adoptions”, despite being gay themselves. Topping off these outdated comments, Dolce proclaimed that “You are born to a mother and a father – or at least that’s how it should be” and added that procreation “must be an act of love”. Leaving no margin for misinterpretation over their stance of IVF, Dolce said,  “I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Uteri [for] rent, semen chosen from a catalog.”

Unsurprisingly, celebrities and the social media sphere have banded together under the banner of #boycottdolceandgabbana scathing the pair for their ludicrously insensitive remarks. Elton John has lead the charge posting the following image and comments across social platforms and it wasn’t long before the likes of celebrity heavyweights Victoria Beckham, Ricky Martin, and Courtney Love took to Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to voice their distain for

How dare you refer to my beautiful children as “synthetic”. And shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF – a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana
