Want to know more? Australian skin scientist, cosmetic chemist and founder/formulator of Synergie Skin Terri (Vinson) Jones, is pioneering the power of different types of hyaluronic acid in the cosmeceutical space. Specifically in her brand’s latest release HyalaVive – a hydrating, pink-tinted serum made with not one, not two, but three different types of hyaluronic acid!

Here, we discuss the difference between some of the common types of hyaluronic acid. And why you should include them in your skin care routine.

Synergie Skin Different Types Of Hyaluronic Acid

High molecular weight hyaluronic acid

This is the best type of hyaluronic acid for epidermal surface hydration. And preventing water loss from the skin. High molecular weight hyaluronic acid attracts and binds water to the skin like a magnet. This provides a visible film of hydration to the top layers of the skin, while visibly reducing fine lines and smoothing the skin’s texture.

Medium molecular weight hyaluronic acid

In contrast, medium weight hyaluronic acid passes through the surface layers of the skin. It locks in moisture on a deeper level of the epidermis for enhanced barrier protection, reduction of fine lines and improved skin texture. Medium molecular weight hyaluronic acid and helps calm the skin and reduce inflammation.

Micro (or ultra low) molecular weight hyaluronic acid

Finally micro hyaluronic acid is a new super active ultra-low molecular weight hyaluronic acid. It can quickly penetrate to offer increased hydration to the deeper levels of the skin. It also delivers an optimised barrier function, deeper hydration, minimises fine lines and improves skin elasticity. Micro hyaluronic acid offers antioxidant protection to the skin to combat environmental free radical damage. And, it may also reduce and protect against skin inflammation, reduce skin sensitivity, and support wound healing of the skin.

Why do the different types of hyaluronic acid matter anyway?

Why do the different types of hyaluronic acid matter anyway? When choosing skincare products with hyaluronic acid, it’s important to consider the specific type and molecular weight used.

Different formulations may be better suited for various skincare concerns. For instance, products with high molecular weight HA are excellent for surface hydration. While those with low molecular weight HA can offer more in-depth moisturisation and anti-ageing benefits. A serum like  HyalaVive which features a few different types of hyaluronic acid is an easy way to take a target a range of concerns with one product.
