The Duchess of Cambridge may have opted for understated glamour at the 2017 BAFTA Awards in London, but she was still the red carpet favourite for the hordes of fans outside the Royal Albert Hall today.

Fashionably late, despite being just a short drive away from their Kensington Palace home, William and Kate were met by loud cheers outside the venue for British film and TV’s biggest night.

Despite the winter chill, Kate opted for a bespoke off-the-shoulder Alexander McQueen gown from her favourite designer.

The stunning dress – a variation on one that first appeared in the spring/summer 16 resort collection – was cut in a drop-waist style and covered in a delicate floral pattern.

Kate and William are big supporters of the BAFTA’s various charitable activities, and have attended a raft of learning programme events.

Prince William was there to present The Fellowship, awarded annually at the ceremony, which is the highest accolade bestowed by the Academy to an individual in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, television or games.

He has been President of the Academy since February 2010.

The fellowship honour this year goes to legendary US comedian Mel Brooks.

Our own Nicole Kidman, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress in Lion, also turned plenty of heads on the red carpet in her Armani gown – which her daughters Sunday Rose, eight, and Faith Margaret, six, apparently didn’t approve of.

“It’s too low. If they’d had their say I wouldn’t have been allowed out in it because it’s low cut!” Nicole, 49, told the Daily Mail.

“They would have gone, ‘No, mum. That’s a rude dress’. They like me more in dresses that make me look like a fairy or a princess.”
