I have been a Clarins girl since before I understood the difference btween retinol and retinal. A well-worn tube of Beauty Flash Balm lived in my clutch through my entire twenties. The Riri-approved Fix Make-Up Spray has bailed me out of more humid weddings than I can count. So when word came through that a new Clarins Double Serum Eye was landing, I was, predictably, all in before I’d even read the fine print.
Here’s the pitch: wrinkles, dark circles, puffiness, all three, in about a week. Seven years of research went into it, apparently inspired by breakthroughs in longevity science, which is a big claim for something the size of my thumb. The headline pairing is turmeric and organic marjoram extract – turmeric for the everyday, time-marches-on ageing, and marjoram (picked out after Clarins reportedly tested 908 different plants) for the ageing we bring on ourselves. The late nights. The stress. The, let’s say, choices.
And look, I want to believe. I really do. But there’s also a difference between being a flawlessly skinned 20-year-old model (see main feature image for refence) and me: a 40 year old, lifelong insomniac who does her best doomscrolling between midnight and 2am.
So I went in with an appropriate amount of side-eye. A serum, however clever, is not going to undo a habit like that. What it can do – and what Clarins is claiming here – is soften the damage. In independent self-assessment testing after just seven days, users reported:
- 23% less visible wrinkles
- 27% less visible under-eye circles
- 25% less visible puffiness
And in a separate clinical test over two weeks, it reduced the perceived age impact of lifestyle-related ageing on the eye contour by a year. A year is a big number for a serum to promise. I’m noting it, not fully trusting it yet – that’s a job for actual use, not a press release.
What’s actually in it: 11 active ingredients in total, including niacinamide (new to this formula, there for brightening), plant-based caffeine (for the puffiness, sourced rather cleverly from spent coffee grounds), and horse chestnut escin, which was already doing quiet, reliable work on blue-toned dark circles in the previous generation.
The bottle is the same dual-chamber design Clarins is known for – two phases that sit apart until you dispense, then merge into one texture the second they hit your hand. It’s how they’ve managed to get niacinamide and marjoram extract, two ingredients that don’t usually cooperate, into the same product. There’s also a dosing wheel now, so you can dial it up or down depending on how the week has gone. One drop is technically all it needs, though I suspect some nights I’ll be tempted to be generous with myself.
Seven days in, and I’ll admit the under-eye circles I’ve had since roughly 2019 look a shade less committed to sticking around. Whether that’s the marjoram, the niacinamide, or just placebo dressed up as skin care, I genuinely can’t say yet.
The puffiness call is harder to judge given my sleep schedule is actively working against it, but there hasn’t been a morning where I’ve reached for extra concealer, which for me is basically a five-star review.
Whether it holds up over the long haul, and whether it can do anything about a year’s worth of 2am scrolling, is a longer story – 365-day verdict TBC.
