You certainly require courage to turn a plastic document folder into couture. Or, to translate the architecture of the human body into a garment. Or, to let chaos theory – actual, mathematical chaos – dictate a silhouette. This year, 12 Australian designers have that courage in spades. And the world is about to notice.
The dynamic dozen are among the finalists just announced for the 2026 World of WearableArt (WOW) Competition, widely considered the Oscars of the wearable art world. Culled from entries spanning 33 countries, only 108 works made the final cut. And Australia, remarkably, ranks second only to host nation New Zealand for the sheer number of finalists it produced. It is, by any measure, a landmark year for Australian design.
A Cohort as Diverse as the Continent Itself
What makes this year’s Australian lineup so compelling isn’t just its size – it’s its range. The finalists include an electronics engineer and a costumier whose creations have dressed Beyonce, standing shoulder to shoulder with first-time entrants and at least one designer returning for an astonishing 13th time. Teachers, technologists, and healthcare workers all found their way into the mix, proof that the impulse to create extraordinary things respects no career path.
WOW’s Head of Competition, Sarah Nathan, put it best: Australian designers, she says, bring an unmistakable boldness – “outlandish, unpredictable and often supersized ideas” delivered with what she calls an unabashed bravery for pushing creative boundaries.
That bravery shows in the source material alone. This year’s Australian entries draw from the ocean, from human biology, from chaos theory, from the duality of identity – rendered in materials as far-flung as circuit boards and, in one striking case, more than 300 recycled plastic document folders.

The Stage They’ll Conquer
Come September, these designers will trade their studios for Wellington – New Zealand’s self-styled creative capital – for a full programme of designer events culminating in the WOW Awards Night, where winners will divide more than NZD $200,000 in prize money.
Their work will find its final form inside the 2026 WOW Show: GLO!, running from 17 September to 4 October at Wellington’s TSB Arena. More than 60,000 audience members are expected to move through an immersive production that folds wearable art into music, dance, cirque performance, and video projections rising storeys high. This year’s works will be judged across six sections – Aotearoa, Open, Avant-garde, Metallic, Kinetic and Bizarre Bra – each staged as its own spectacle within the larger show.
An Open Invitation
Perhaps the most striking thing about WOW isn’t the finalists already chosen – it’s the door it leaves open. As Nathan notes, the competition welcomes entries from people of every background, a reminder that creativity is not the exclusive property of the professionally creative. Her hope is that this year’s Australian showing — engineers and teachers standing beside couturiers – inspires even more Australians to imagine themselves as future finalists.
Now approaching four decades of existence, WOW remains, in its own words, a glorious rebellion against the ordinary. This September, twelve Australians will help lead that rebellion onto one of the world’s most extraordinary stages.
