2015 Logies: Carrie Bickmore Wins Gold & Raises Golden Moment For Brain Cancer Awareness

Host of Channel Ten’s The Project, Carrie Bickmore has taken out the gong for most popular personality on Australian TV.  In her fourth attempt to win the Gold Logie, Bickmore finally nailed it at this year’s TVWeek Logie Awards in Melbourne and used her moment in the spotlight to raise awareness for brain cancer, which her husband died from in 2010.

Wearing a stunning, silver, low-cut custom J’Aton gown, Bickmore added one very important accessory to her outfit as she graced the stage to accept her coveted award – a bright blue beanie. Bickmore’s late husband suffered through 10 years of bravely battling brain cancer and the golden girl of TV made a moving speech to raise awareness of the disease. One, that kills more people under 40 than any other form of cancer – and yet receives very little funding. Here are some of Carrie’s moving words;

“Everyone thinks it is this rare form of cancer. It is not. It kills more people under 40, and it is a lot of you in this room, more people under 40 than any other cancer. It kills more kids than any other disease. In 2010, my husband, Greg, was one of the unlucky ones. Over 10 years, I watched him suffer multiple seizures a day, lose feeling down one side of his body, have his little three-year-old have to push him around in a wheelchair because he couldn’t walk anymore.

“He was an incredibly brave man. He was a great dad. He was a great husband. He was a great brother and he was a great friend.”

Through tears, Bickmore recounted the many times her husband would wear hats – especially beanies – throughout his cancer journey because “he felt embarrassed about his scars and his head”, she said. In a plea to get Australia talking about brain cancer, Bickmore wants everyone to whack on their favourite beanie and wear ‘beanies for brain cancer.

“I used to say to him don’t be embarrassed, scars are really, really cool and beanies are also really cool. I want to ask anybody that is on TV in Australia tomorrow, to whack on a beanie. I want to get the nation talking about brain cancer”, said Bickmore.

Other Logies News…

Carrie Bickmore took the Gold Logie from other nominees including Asher Keddie (Offspring) – who won this year’s Silver Logie, comedy duo Andy Lee and Hamish Blake (Hamish & Andy’s Gap Year South America), Stephen Peacocke (Home & Away) – who also won the Silver, and DIY favourite The Block’s Scott Cam.

Keddie, who recently gave birth to beautiful son, Valentino, won her sixth Silver Logie for her work on cult hit show Offspring and also for Party Tricks.

Carrie Bickmore wasn’t the only one to use the acceptance speech podium to raise awareness for important social issues. Actress Miranda Tapsell, who won two Logies for her performance on the Nine Network’s popular series Love Child, called for stories about Aboriginal people to be given more focus on television saying, “Put more beautiful people of colour on TV and connect viewers in ways that transcend race and unite us, that’s the real Team Australia.”

Danielle Cormack continued her reign for Foxtel’s Wentworth taking out Most Outstanding Actress.

The Voice won the Most Outstanding Entertainment Program and Most Outstanding Comedy went to ABCs Utopia.

Most Outstanding Children’s Program went to the ABC’s Nowhere Boys.

In current affairs world, Channel Seven won a Logie for Most Outstanding News Coverage for their reporting during the Lindt Cafe Siege in Sydney while the ABC’s Four Corners took a Logie for Most Outstanding Public Affairs.

Red Carpet Glamour

Red carpet king and judge on Australia’s Next Top Model, Alex Perry was “excited about people watching” he said of checking out the glitz and glam of the red carpet gala.

Postcards presenter Lauren Phillips was one of the first to hit the red carpet in an Aurelio Costarella dress – which supposedly got ‘lost in transition’ from Perth but arrived just in time. Other favourite glamazons on the night were also new mums, with Mornings co-host Sonia Kruger (who only went back to work this week after having baby Maggie in January) sported a glamorous white Stephen Kahlil gown, while Asher Keddie, Megan Gale and Jennifer Hawkins all cut amazing figures in floor length black Alex Perry creations.
