If you live in Melbourne you are amongst people with the most eclectic taste, according to Spotify research. Listening to over 715 genres of music, Melbourne folk just pip Sydney-siders to the post who listen.

Sydney’s Inner-West residents and Melbourne’s Glen Iris in South-east residents have been crowned the ‘hipster suburbs’ thanks to their musical downloads. Both suburbs stream the highest amount of different genres of music than anywhere else in Australia.

Who do you think is the highest streamer of gay-pride inspired playlists? It’s not Sydney, not Melbourne but BRISBANE! Congratulations to Brisbane on being the Proudest city.

What Does Spotify tell us about Aussies taste in Music
Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ was most popular Pride Anthem

Baby, we were Born This Way: Lady Gaga’s Born This Way came out tops as the most popular pride anthem. It was the most commonly found track across the pride-themed playlists analysed.

Troye Sivan and The Rubens make their debut. This year, newcomer Troye Sivan debuted at #11 in the list of Australia’s Most Streamed Aussie Artists, just pipping international sensation Iggy Azalea to the post. Local rockers The Rubens also made the cut, coming in at #16.

Fleetwood Mac is “Everywhere”. Topping the list as Australia’s Most Streamed “Legacy” Artist (artists who rose to fame in the 60s, 70s or 80s) is Fleetwood Mac in a landslide victory. They were followed by David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Bob Marley & The Wailers and INXS.

What are the most common trends and music from each region in Australia?

NSW and VIC keep things local. NSW and VIC are most likely to throw their support behind the local music scene, with Aussie up-and-comers Banoffee, Masketta Fall and George Maple all topping the Most Distinctive Artists list.

SA loves pop-punk and QLD listens to country. Pop-punk rockers The Story So Far and Neck Deep were streamed at an unusually high rate in SA, while country starts Kenny Chesney and Slim Dusty proved to be disproportionately popular in QLD.

Legacy Artists: Aussie rockers AC/DC are most loved by WA whereas VIC stream the most The Beatles and Shannon Noll over any other state per capita.
