Growing up in Hawaii, Janel Parrish favoured the carefree ‘beachey’ look.
So it’s one of the aspects of playing the character of Mona Vanderwaal in the US family series ‘Pretty Little Liars’ that she gets her hair and makeup done professionally every day. One trick she’d never seen before though is how to use a straightening iron to create curls. Beauty Editor Glenn Nutley gives her a lesson in how it’s done, then they team up for a stunning photo session to add to her portfolio.

So today we are doing a beauty shoot with Janel Parrish from Pretty Little Liars and I’m going to be showing you how to do curls using a straightening iron. So today I’m going to start by applying this GHD heat protection spray which actually protects the hair from the heating implements. Today we are using the new GHD Alits and we are going to be demonstrating how you can actually create curls with a straightening iron.
So instead of using the iron to flatten the cuticle of the hair we are actually using it to create bend. I don’t want the bend to go all the way through to the ends of the hair so I kinda just slide it through and let it drop out.
Its actually really easy because the straightening irons are so hot they create the curl really quickly. I like to do it down the hair and really slide it through and leave the end out and it gives that end a little bit of a bend and when we mess it all up it will give it more of a natural, beach like texture. There are multiple ways you can do this, today I’m kinda doing it like flat down the hair. The other way you can do it, is actually rolling it more like a barrel curl and sliding it through the hair this way. but you do get more of a classic curl that way. It gives it a little more body.
Glenn: Jannel, I always love the hair and make-up you get on the show, is it fun you get to be so creative with your looks all the time?
Janel: Its so much fun, especially because my character has four different personalities each season so four different looks each season but the girl underneath it all kinda loves it.
Glenn: So you must have a great team on the show because I think everyones hair and make-up always looks really good on that show.
Janel: Yeah, we have a really good team, we work with Cindy Meguins and Kim Ferry who are great.
So because we want it to me more of a natural, beachy kinda vibe, I’m now going to mess up the waves by adding abit of dry texture spray. This is the new Bubble Humble One. To give you the fresh from the surf look. Then of course my favourite which is always a powder brush and hair spray. Spray the brush and go over the fly aways without flattening the hair.
