It’s the middle of winter, and if you walk into almost any home in Australia right now, you’re likely to be greeted by the same familiar sight: the dreaded indoor drying rack. It’s sitting in the living room, draped over dining chairs, and completely taking over the hallway.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! For many of us, this indoor “laundry obstacle course” isn’t just an eyesore; it’s actually impacting how we live.
New research from Samsung Australia has revealed a surprising truth: 62% of Australians are actively avoiding using their dryers right now due to energy cost concerns. The fear of the dreaded winter energy bill is so intense that almost half of us (41%) feel more pressure this year to skip the dryer compared to last year.
And the cost isn’t just financial, it’s also social. The study found that a staggering 1 in 5 Australians are actually cancelling social plans and avoiding hosting friends and family because they are too embarrassed by the amount of wet clothes hanging around their homes.
But are we punishing ourselves, and our social lives, over an outdated myth?
The Truth About Modern Dryers
If you think using a dryer guarantees immediate bill shock, you are likely picturing old, energy-hungry vented models. But technology has moved fast, and the game has completely changed.
Phil Gaut, Director of Consumer Electronics at Samsung Australia, points out that our fears are largely based on the technology of the past.
“Australia is famous for its incredible weather and we’re used to getting through laundry loads using the clothesline in the backyard,” says Phil.
“Come winter, as we spend more time indoors, we are choosing to be surrounded by wet washing rather than our mates because we’re concerned about using the dryer.”
He explains that this sacrifice is increasingly unnecessary. “Not only are heat pump systems significantly more energy-efficient than old vented or condenser dryers, they also operate at cooler temperatures which tend to be kinder to your clothes,” he adds. “With AI being leveraged to reduce energy by 20% on each load, there is no need for Australians to go dark when the clouds do.”
The Heat Pump Revolution
So, what exactly has changed? It comes down to Heat Pump technology and Artificial Intelligence.
Modern machines use a Hybrid Heat Pump to preheat the air to the optimal drying temperature. This efficient, gentle method has allowed many modern dryers to achieve an impressive 10-star energy rating.
Furthermore, machines equipped with AI Energy Mode (controlled via the SmartThings App) can optimise cycle settings and load timing. For instance, the massive Samsung 19.5kg Bespoke AI Combo is capable of achieving up to 20% energy savings per wash load and 10% energy savings per dryer load. It even uses AI to sense moisture levels, automatically stopping the cycle when clothes are dry to prevent over-drying and protect heavy winter fabrics.

Pro-Hacks for Time-Poor Parents
To help navigate the winter washing pile, content creator and home organisation advocate Minakshi Gajera (@mums_great_life) has shared her top foundational hacks to make the most of this new technology:
- The Dry Towel Trick: Add a clean, dry towel to your dryer for the first 10–15 minutes. It absorbs moisture faster and drastically reduces drying time, which is especially useful in winter when thicker fabrics hold onto more water.
- Stop the Sheet Tangle: Tie the corners of your fitted sheets loosely together before washing. This prevents them from turning into a giant, tangled ball. They spin more evenly, come out less wet, and dry faster.
- Wash Smarter, Not Hotter: Washing in cold water saves energy and protects clothing colours. Mina uses the Auto Dispense feature on her Bespoke AI Washer, which recommends the best cycle for cold water and activates the detergent before adding it to the drum.
“There are a few simple things Australians can do to overcome their winter woes in the laundry,” adds Phil from Samsung. “It starts with selecting a washing machine and dryer that are the right capacity for your family… Pair your washing machine with a heat pump dryer with a 10-star energy rating that further leverages AI Energy Mode to boost efficiencies with every load.”
“With a range of intelligent and energy-efficient laundry solutions available, Australians don’t need to choose between saving energy, spending time with their loved ones, and having a clutter-free home,” he concludes.
This winter, it might be time to fold up the drying rack, trust the technology, and invite your friends back over.
