This Skin Clinic Just Made a Very Strong Case For Trusting Your Therapist

Prior to my appointment at Gladesville’s luxe new Injxu Face + Skin Clinic, I had my heart set on the popular Cosmelan treatment and had come prepared. I’d paused my use of active ingredients, cleared my social calendar for 48 hours (intense shedding was a predicted side effect), and double-checked I wasn’t on any medication that could interfere with the influencer-approved chemical peel, designed to treat stubborn, deep-seated pigmentation like melasma and sunspots.

However, working within the clinic’s safety-first and evidence-based treatment philosophy, the expert team at the stylish salon in Sydney’s lower North Shore had other (much wiser) plans.

After casually mentioning that I’d be jetting off to sunny, sweaty Thailand in less than a week, my trusty, treating clinician, threw a spanner in the works. Drawing on Injxu’s emphasis on conservative, considered, context-driven treatment planning to guide the decision-making process, she recommended a more suitable alternative – the lower-risk, but equally effective pHformula M.E.L.A. Resurfacing Treatment.

It wasn’t what I came in for. But, given Injxu Founder and Registered Nurse Laurisa Dannoun’s commitment to guiding patients toward the most appropriate (not just the most popular!), treatments, it was exactly what my skin needed…

According to Laurisa, “At Injxu Face + Skin, we don’t chase trends we chase results that are earned through understanding. Every treatment decision we make is grounded in the science of how skin actually works. Its biology, its barriers, its triggers, and its capacity to heal. I founded Injxu because I believed that patients deserve more than a menu of treatments. They deserve a clinician who can explain why their skin is behaving the way it is, what is actually happening beneath the surface, and what realistic, evidence-based improvement looks like for them specifically.

Patient safety is not a box we tick. It is the lens through which every consultation, every protocol, and every product decision is made. We do not treat skin we do not understand, and we do not recommend what we cannot justify clinically. Education is woven into every appointment because an informed patient is an empowered one. When you leave Injxu, you should understand your skin better than when you arrived.

This is what clinical excellence looks like in aesthetics not the most aggressive treatment, but the most intelligent one.”

M.E.L.A Magic

There’s a particular kind of humility that comes with lying under a treatment light, makeup removed, while someone with actual training assesses your skin in real time. Suddenly, the TikTok saves and late-night Googling feel… a little less authoritative.

At Injxu Face + Skin, this moment is less about quick fixes and more about informed decision-making, grounded in clinical expertise and patient safety. Consultations here are designed as collaborative, educational touchpoints – ensuring every treatment is both understood and appropriate.  As part of the process, Elle explained that while Cosmelan is powerful, it also comes with downtime, sensitivity, and strict post-care. Not exactly ideal when humidity, UV exposure, and poolside lounging are imminent.

The Injxu team’s recommended alternative –  the M.E.L.A.  Resurfacing Treatment – was a controlled and customised skin resurfacing option tailored to my specific skin concerns. (Roughness, texture, and redness, are you in the room?)

Unlike traditional peels, which tend to focus on stripping back the surface layer, this version, which utilises pHformula products, leans into something closer to regeneration. The idea is to stimulate the skin’s natural renewal process. And, encourage cell turnover not just on the surface, but deeper within the skin – without triggering the kind of trauma that leads to peeling, redness, or days spent hiding indoors.

In practice, that meant no dramatic “before and after” shedding moment. No tight, uncomfortable mask feeling. No panic about sun exposure a week later.

Following Injxu’s structured treatment protocol, the first step was an enzymatic double cleanse with the E.X.F.O. Cleanse, before applying the S.P. Complex to measure skin sensitivity and increase permeability for optimal penetration of the following products.

The main event – the M.E.L.A. Powerclay application – followed.

The M.E.L.A. Powerclay itself is applied as a smooth, earthy-toned mask – deceptively simple for something working quite hard beneath the surface. It’s formulated specifically to target hyperpigmentation, using a blend of acids and active ingredients to interrupt melanin production while gently accelerating cell turnover. Think mandelic, lactic and salicylic acids, alongside brightening agents like 4-butylresorcinol and retinol – all delivered through pHformula’s PH-DVC complex, which essentially helps the ingredients penetrate more effectively without overwhelming the skin.

What I noticed most, though, wasn’t the science – it was the feel.

There’s a mild tingle, but nothing approaching the sting of a traditional peel. No watering eyes, no counting down the seconds until it’s neutralised. Instead, it’s calm. Controlled. Almost underwhelming in the moment – which, as it turns out, is exactly the point.

The final steps were the application of the V.I.T.A. C Radiance Release to boost collagen production, brighten, protect against free radical damage and refine skin texture. And, P.O.S.T. Recovery Cream to re-hydrate, soothe and reduce inflammation.

Throughout the treatment, the emphasis remained on how each step contributed to a safe, cumulative outcome, aligning with Injxu’s philosophy of building a measured response in the skin rather than forcing one. It’s less about instant drama, more about cumulative results – the kind that reveal themselves over days rather than minutes.

Post-treatment, there was no redness. No visible irritation. Just skin that looked… quietly better. Slightly brighter, more even, like it’s been turned up half a notch rather than completely reset.

It’s only in the days that follow – and, crucially, while navigating the heat and humidity of Thailand – that I really understand the value of that restraint. My skin held up. There was no unexpected sensitivity, no flare-ups, no need to hide under a hat more than usual. The pigmentation I’d been targeting appears softened, not stripped away, but gently diffused.

And perhaps most tellingly, there was no regret.

Because while the allure of a quick-fix, high-impact treatment is strong – especially one with a cult following – this experience is a reminder that skin doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Timing matters. Context matters. And, sometimes, the best results come from doing less, but doing it smarter.

At Injxu Face + Skin, this mindset is embedded at every level of the clinic experience – from consultation through to aftercare. It’s not about pushing the most viral treatment, but the most appropriate one. And, in my case, that meant trusting a systemised, clinic-led approach grounded in expertise and long-term skin health. Rather than the algorithm in my pocket!

A week later, in a different climate, with my skin still behaving itself, it’s hard to argue with the outcome.
