Temple & Webster celebrates the design, work and careers of 10 of the country’s most exciting emerging furniture and interiors product designers with the return of the Temple & Webster Emerging Designer Award in 2014.
The Carousel congratulates Viktor Legin & Edward Linacre as the 2014 winner of the esteemed Temple & Webster Emerging Designer Award.
Launched by the online homewares retailer in 2013 to recognise and increase the profile of some of Australia’s best up-and-coming furniture and interiors product designers, the Temple & Webster Emerging Designer Award 2014 is already an important and respected initiative for the interior design community.
Commenting on the award, Temple & Webster Editorial Director Karen McCartney said:
“This prestigious award not only gives the nominees a kick-start in their career but also gives the public access to beautiful and unique Australian design. It also enables our audience to learn more about and vote for their favourite designer. Fans will also be able to purchase a selection of products curated by the Temple & Webster team for a special Emerging Designer Award sale event that will be held online during the voting period”. McCartney also noted the importance of fostering local design talent: “It’s a great opportunity not only for the designers – helping to showcase their work and talent to Temple & Webster’s large audience and the public at large, but also important to our team – supporting local Australian design talent is something close to our hearts”.
The 10 Australian designers are a mix of emerging national talent from categories including furniture, lighting, large product and ceramics, and were selected by an independent panel of leading influencers from the Australian design community. Temple & Webster’s expert panel includes David Clark, interiors expert and ex-editor of Vogue Living Australia; David Harrison, design commentator and founder of Design Daily; Amanda Talbot, celebrated stylist, author and design commentator; and Karen McCartney, Editorial Director at Temple & Webster and renowned author.
The Short Listed Nominees:
Guy Keulemans
Guy is a multi-disciplinary designer working in product design, graphics and installation. He produces critical objects informed by history, philosophy and experimental methodology. He holds a Masters in Humanitarian Design from the Design Academy Eindhoven and Bachelor of Design (1st) from University of New South Wales’ College of Fine Art.
Coco Reynolds
Coco established her design studio, Marz Designs, in 2010 after graduating from the University of Canberra. Inspired to push boundaries of many mediums and functions, she has since developed her own style as a diverse and confident designer. Her energies are focused on product, lighting and furniture, and is forever seeking new ways of solving problems and creating beautiful, functional items.
Ben Wahrlich
As a trained design engineer, Ben has a comprehensive understanding of manufacturing principles. He utilises cutting edge production technologies combined with traditional materials, which has led to developing a unique and contemporary aesthetic in his work. Ben operates design studio ANAESTHETIC, located in Sydney.
Dale Hardiman & Adam Lynch of Dowel Jones
Dale & Adam are interested in simplifying objects to their bare essentials without compromising on aesthetic values, while also minimising materials and processed by working with manufacturers involved in the development of everyday materials and objects. The duo has won great renown and awards for their range of exquisite copper pendants and rubber & dowel floor lights.
Viktor Legin & Edward Linacre of Copper
Viktor & Edward collaborate together under their design banner Copper, which is a product development consultancy servicing clients from medical to homewares. Their work incorporates a philosophy and willingness to embrace nature and to consider all biological imperatives, including a sense of human emotion.
Liam Mugavin
Liam focused on furniture and lighting, and strives to express ideas through materiality and form with products that are a union of high design and efficient production. His aesthetic is simple yet bold, elegant yet subtle and always executed with attention to detail. He has spent time living in Japan, which has a vital influence on his current practice and design sensibility.
Rowen Wagner
Rowen graduated with a Bachelor of Design in Industrial Design (first class honours) from University of Technology, Sydney. He has travelled extensively during his career, and has had renowned clients including Volkswagen, Peugeot, Railcorp and Lusail. Inspired to create enjoyment in the use of day-to-day objects, he seeks to balance line, proportion and volume.
Alex Gilmour & Dominic Chong of Evie Group
Establishing Evie Group in 2010, this duo covers a range of award winning homewares, lighting and furniture pieces inspired by American modernism and the simplicity of Japanese and Scandinavian design. Their underlying philosophy is to create designs that are carefully considered, elegant and timeless in their aesthetic.
Cindy-Lee Davies
Cindy-Lee launched Lightly in 2005 with an acclaimed range of homewares and lighting inspired by doilies and lace. Marrying the aesthetics of traditional craft with cutting-edge technology, she established a new decorative style dubbed “Nanna Technology’ that has since become a signature throughout Lightly’s work.
Andy Grigor
Andy is dedicated to designing engaging and unique products for everyday solutions. With a real passion and an eye for detail, his desire to create beautiful objects is expressed in his diverse mix ranging from bespoke furniture to lighting. Andy has won numerous awards both locally and internationally.
