Are you sat at your desk trying to concentrate and it’s as if you’re wading through thick mud? The cogs of your brain are clinking and clunking like an old tractor and you need something to boost your brain power.

Your brain needs fuel for thought, so provide it with the right food that will boost your concentration, improve memory and enhance your focus.

Here are 7 foods to boost your brain power and keep those cerebral cogs whirling away.

1. Blueberries

These yummy little blueberries are not only delicious but full of brain-boosting goodness. Research has shown that they boost concentration for up to five hours. They contain some super antioxidants which stimulate your blood flow and effectively transport more oxygen to your brain, giving you a fresher mind.

Try them as a mid-afternoon snack to boost brain power or start your day right with a delicious bowl of porridge (oats not only supply you with a slow release of energy to get you through the morning hump but they also have good magnesium levels which is good for brain function) topped with some blueberries, almonds and honey.

2. Green tea

Not only does green tea contain natural caffeine which is a stimulant, but it also contains antioxidants and nutrients and an important amino acid called L-theanine. This amino increases the activity of alpha waves in the brain and when combined with caffeine these two are a pretty potent pair at improving brain function.

3. Leafy greens.

The greener they are, the better. They contain antioxidants and carotenoids which boost and protect your brain power. Leafy greens contain vitamin B which are proven to help your memory and focus and folic acid which helps keep your head clear on those cloudy days. Try throwing some fresh baby spinach into your salad at lunch or roast some delicious crunchy kale for dinner.

4. Fabulous fatty fish oils

Fishy fats may not sound like the most appealing option but in fact fish oils are one the most essential components our body needs for healthy brain activity. Salmon is one of the best fish for its high content of omega-3 fatty acids which aid memory retention and behavioural and mental performance. It’s also delicious and very versatile. Try marinating a salmon fillet in some honey ginger and soy then lightly pan frying accompanied by some fresh steamed greens for a tasty treat.

5. Turmeric

Turmeric has been used in food and medicine for eons. Turmeric contains curcumin – a powerful antioxidant which boosts levels of the brain hormone BDNF (Brain-derived neurotrophic factor) and increases the growth of new neurons and fights various degenerative processes in the brain. It’s anti-inflammatory properties and potent antioxidants make it a great brain benefactor. Turmeric is great to cook curries with, adding flavour and a vibrant colour, so try it next time you are in the kitchen.

6. Avocado

Avo’s! One of the most yummy and popular foods on the planet. Its fatty components are body beneficial for many reasons, but one of those is that its mono-saturated fatty acids help protect nerve cells in the brain. It also contains a lot of vitamins which are beneficial for brain health and helps to improve memory.

7. Dark Chocolate

If you feel like a naughty sweet little snack to keep you going then dark chocolate is the answer. It contain small amounts of caffeine and also is a mood booster. It contains flavanol which increases blood flow to the brain therefore supplying it with more fuel for thought. Also remember the darker the better, it doesn’t have the same effect if you eat the milky kind unfortunately.

So boost your brain power because it is a powerful thing!
