Priceline Pharmacy’s Hair and Make-up Director Sarah Laidlaw is here to help you put your best foot (or face) forward for your next Zoom meeting.

As the weeks of social distancing continue to play out, video calls are the new norm as our personal and professional lives take place onscreen; cue that Zoom meeting with your boss, virtual date or happy hour with your friends.

Our new way of life means that we’re now seeing much more of our own faces than ever before. So, if you’re guilty of worrying about how presentable you look on camera or have asked the question – “How can I convince my colleagues I didn’t just wake up and roll out of bed?” – you are not alone! However, if your laptop camera isn’t doing you any favours (and you’ve already tried the “Touch Up My Appearance” filter!), Priceline Pharmacy’s Hair and Make-up Director Sarah Laidlaw is here to help you put your best foot (or face) forward.

In the same way that you take multiple selfies before nailing the right shot, you also need to practice your best Zoom-face. Before your next video call, spend a few minutes setting up in the right space to get the best natural light. Your largest light source should be right in front of you (or with no more than a 45-degree variance – it’s a science!). Then set up your screen so that the camera sits at an angle that is head-on and at eye-level

HINT: Use a set of books, a stool, or a higher table to make sure your camera is at the same level as your eyes.

#2 Get to first base

skincare, beauty, zoom

When it comes to looking good on camera, your first base is key. While there’s no need to go through a whole 10-step routine (less is more in the days of social distancing), skincare is still absolutely essential when you are starting out any look, whether you’re home or not. Simply apply your favourite hydrating moisturiser to instantly add luminosity to your skin.

My pick is LA ROCHE-POSAY Hyalu B5 Hyaluronic Anti-Wrinkle Care Moisturiser which gives me an instant glow. Next, apply concealer – this will be your best friend when it comes to covering up skin imperfections that are often magnified by poor camera quality.

Personally, I’m loving the Revolution Conceal and Define Concealer. I apply it to the entire face in a thin layer, using a little more on the areas that I like extra coverage (Cue those dark under-eye circles).

#3 The eyes have it

I think we can all admit that we’re guilty of sleeping a little longer and waking up a little later. This doesn’t mean your boss needs to know though. Mascara can work wonders for opening up and widening the eyes – especially in the morning. I’m currently loving L’Oréal False Lash X-Fiber Mascara. Hold the wand horizontally at the base of your lashes, then zigzag from the roots upwards to thicken and separate. If you haven’t already now is the time to get yourself an eyelash curler – so you can prep your lashes just as you would prep your skin. Try the Revlon Lash Curler before mascara for that extra lift. Don’t forget your brows! Your eyebrows frame your face and bring together your whole look, making you look extremely put together in front of the camera. Be sure to clearly define your brows, using a great eyebrow pencil like Models Prefer Luxury Powder Brow Liner.

#4 Sweet cheeks

Thanks to pixelated webcams, our skin can be left looking a little bit flat – which is why Zoom calls can often leave you looking a little washed out (know you’re not alone). To avoid this scenario apply a quick swipe of blush or bronzer to give you a pop of colour and add dimension – just make sure it’s sheer and blended well. For a great cream cheek colour that doubles as a lip tint, try the Luma Just a Touch. Or for a pretty powder formulation that suits almost all skin tones apply The Balm’s Hot Mama to the top of your cheeks for a youthful glow.

#5 Let’s talk lips

If you’re usually a lip girl, then definitely throw on your favourite shade for the camera. It’s an easy way to add colour and definition to your face! If you’re not big on lipstick, then keep your lips hydrated.

A little flush of colour in the lips helps maintain that professionalism – even if you’re wearing PJ pants under the desk!

I love the Lanolips tinted balms for a sheer colour that makes your lips look healthy, happy and almost Snow White worthy! There are three shades to choose from – Nude, Rose and Rhubarb – that suit all skin tones.
