While it may sit in the sunny shadows of the more popularly visited islands of Phuket and Koh Samui, or the slick city streets of Bangkok, this Summer it’s time for Krabi to shine. Having recently spent a relaxing weekend in the province nestled on the west coast of southern Thailand here are my highlights on everything you need to cover in a classic 48-hour Krabi itinerary.

Stay

Lured by its secluded location and spectacular views, the inaccessible-by-road Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Krabi beckoned as among the best bases for Krabi visitors.

The journey to the resort proved to be an adventure in itself – requiring a boat ride from the nearby harbour. However, the trip added an element of exclusivity and an overall allure to the experience. And certainly brought to fruition the adage that the journey truly is as important as the destination. Or in this instance, “almost as important”, with the resort home to a range of offerings that deliver a truly tranquil retreat from the outside world.

A stay at Centara presents the opportunity to take advantage of an array of amenities. These include morning dips in the refreshing pool, kayaking adventure from the pristine beach after lunch, the occasional visit from monkeys descending from the nearby mountains sunset, and the remarkable views from the resort – which provides a stunning backdrop for relaxation – at any time of day.

Oh a feast of flavours, with the Centara home to a host of dining destinations. These include Coast for casual beachside dining with panoramic views of the Pai Plong Bay. Sua Bua and its authentic collection of Southern Thai seafood dishes. Or indulgent in-room deliveries for those who just won’t be torn away from their sleeping spots (and having spent an indulgent amount of time in suite ourselves, to this we pass no judgment!)

Play

Given its location on Thailand’s Andaman Sea, Krabi naturally beckons with a plethora of water-based adventures.

Among its most iconic landmarks is the Railay Beach, renowned for its stunning limestone cliffs that tower over the pristine white sands. Adventure seekers can try rock climbing on these cliffs. While leisure lovers can explore the hidden lagoons and caves accessible by boat.

A visit to the Four Islands, namely Phra Nang Cave, Chicken Island, Tup Island, and Poda Island, is also a must for those craving idyllic beaches and vibrant coral reefs. From snorkelling to sunbathing, these islands offer an array of water activities and provide a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Otherwise, a boat excursion to the Hong Islands reveals hidden lagoons and emerald-green waters, perfect for snorkeling and basking in the unspoiled beauty of nature.

For those who prefer to alternate between dipping their toes in the water and keeping their feet firmly on dry ground, the natural spectacle of the Thung Teao Forest Natural Park (home to the famed Krabi Hot Springs and the stunning Krabi Crystal Lagoon) provides an enchanting encounter with the region’s biodiversity.

For culture-loving queens and kings, the Wat Kaew Korawaram temple showcases exquisite Thai architecture and provides a serene escape from the hustle and bustle. Similarly, the Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Sua) stands out as a spiritual sanctuary with a challenging climb leading to panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.

Ultimately whether scaling limestone cliffs, relaxing on pristine beaches, or exploring historic hot spots, Krabi unfolds as a multifaceted destination, promising a harmonious blend of adventure, relaxation, and cultural discovery for every traveller.

Get away for the day

Those spending an extended period in Krabi may want to consider a day trip to Phi Phi – the nearby island boasting stunning landscapes and a rich cinematic history. To cut costs, take our tip and consider combining your boat trip with others who may have the same idea (ours just happened to be two English girls, looking for someone to pool resources for the long boat ride).

While Phi Phi’s iconic locations have featured in movies such as James Bond, the islands’s allures goes beyond its cinematic fame. Its crystal-clear waters, limestone cliffs, and vibrant marine life make it a paradise for nature enthusiasts.

Phi Phil also boasts a vibrant market where visitors can sample local delicacies, shop for souvenirs, and soak in the lively atmosphere. No trip is complete without indulging in the local culinary delights, and Phi Phi offers an array of delectable options. A visit to the street markets is a must, where we encountered a vibrant display of Thai street food. One standout recommendation is the BBQ catfish, a delightful treat for the taste buds. The markets also feature a variety of seafood, including lobster and crabs sourced locally. The lively atmosphere is accentuated by the presence of a Thai kickboxing match, providing a glimpse into the local culture.

While the rainy season may have slightly dampened our swimsuit it certainly did little to dull our spirit. And in fact proved to be an excellent time to visit, as the crowds are thinner, allowing for a more intimate and authentic encounter that offered a perfect combination of crystal-clear swimming spots, cultural experiences and culinary delights.
