Dear Kochie. We really like you. (Oh. And the cash cow!). But our money is on the fact that a lot more Australian’s tuned into Sunrise over their morning breakfast, to catch presenter Edwina Bartholomew, who last week revealed that she has embarked on a deeply personal and impactful journey as the National Ambassador for the Leukaemia Foundation. The announcement, made at the commencement of Blood Cancer Month in September, marks a significant chapter in her life, intertwining her public persona with a cause that has profoundly affected her.

A Personal Battle with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia

In July 2024, Edwina received a diagnosis of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML), a type of blood and bone marrow cancer. Despite the shock of the diagnosis, she remained optimistic, noting that CML is treatable with a daily tablet. She emphasized the importance of routine health checks, especially for women over 40, as her diagnosis came without prior symptoms. By April 2025, Edwina shared that she was “almost in molecular remission,” highlighting the effectiveness of her treatment and the significance of early detection.

Advocacy and Ambassadorship and a Storied Career in Journalism

Edwina’s career spans over two decades, during which she has established herself as a respected figure in Australian journalism. Born in Whyalla, South Australia, she pursued her education at Charles Sturt University, earning a degree in journalism. Her professional journey began in regional newsrooms, eventually leading her to the Seven Network. As a reporter and presenter on Sunrise, Edwina has covered major events, including five Olympic Games, and has been recognized for her engaging storytelling and commitment to delivering news with integrity.

However, beyond her role in journalism, Edwina has long been an advocate for various worthwhile causes. She serves as an ambassador for the Leukaemia Foundation, UNICEF Australia, and the Nelune Foundation. Her advocacy work focuses on issues such as maternal and neonatal health, children’s rights, and, more recently, raising awareness about blood cancer. Through her ambassadorship with the Leukaemia Foundation, Edwina aims to build a stronger network of care across Australia, ensuring that individuals feel supported not only at diagnosis but throughout treatment and beyond.

A Message of Hope and Resilience

Edwina’s journey from a respected media personality to a passionate advocate for blood cancer awareness serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of early detection, the strength found in community, and the importance of supporting one another through life’s challenges. Her story continues to inspire and offer hope to many facing similar battles.
