Trend to Try: The Loose, Low-Slung Ponytail

The Trend: The “Un-Done” Low Pony

It’s no newsflash that the low ponytail is back, but the latest iteration is a little more… relaxed. From Anne V on the red carpet to the runways of Stella McCartney, the “un-done” pony is the refreshingly casual counterbalance to your polished winter wardrobe.

Why we love it: It’s the ultimate “cool-girl” style that works just as well with a black-tie gown as it does tucked into a high-neck woolly jumper.

How to Hack the Look (By Hair Type)

The biggest hurdle? Keeping a “loose” look from falling apart by lunchtime. Here is how to make it stay, depending on your hair type:

For Fine or Slippery Hair: The “Under-Tease” If your hair hates being pinned down, try teasing the under-section of your hair before tying. This creates a hidden “shelf” of volume that keeps the ponytail buoyant and prevents it from sliding down your neck.

  • Pro Tip: Use small, grippy clear elastics rather than fabric bands.

For Thick or Heavy Hair: The “Double Pony” Don’t let gravity drag you down. Divide your hair into two sections:

  1. Tie the bottom half into a tight, secure pony at the nape.

  2. Drape the top half over it and secure loosely, camouflaging the first elastic.

  • The Result: All the “effortless” volume, with none of the weight.

For That “Runway” Finish: The Halo Effect Follow Dion Lee’s lead: after securing your tail about four inches below the nape, gently rub your palms over the top and sides of your head. This creates a soft, “catch-the-light” halo that looks intentional, not messy.

The Loose Low-Slung Ponytail Toolkit

  • For Grit: Redken Pillow Proof Dry Shampoo (Spray on mid-lengths for instant staying power).

  • For Polish: Redken Fashion Works 12 (A light-hold mist to keep the “halo” in place).

  • The Essential: Clear elastics and U-pins to hide your hair ties.
