Nestled in the picturesque countryside of New South Wales’ Central West, charming Bathurst beckons visitors with its rich history and vibrant culture. Making it an ideal destination for a quick getaway. Located less than three hour’s drive from Sydney, this 3 day Bathurst itinerary offers a perfect plan for discovering the best of the Gold Country. Just in time for a King’s Birthday long weekend road trip!

Opulent, Eco Accommodation

Head off early enough after signing out of work, and you should arrive just in time for a sunset lap at Mount Panorama. The iconic 6.2-kilometre track that serves as the spiritual home of Australian motorsport, including the Bathurst 1000 motor race held each October. Despite the modest speed limit of 60 km/h, the sharp turns and uphill climb are enough to encourage even the most demure driver to channel their inner Peter Brock. Hold tight! it’s worth it for the impressive outlook from the top.

Then, check into your accommodation. One of the best in town is Rest at Boxgrove , owned and operated by Bathurst locals and husband and wife team Ben and Kayla Fry.

The brains behind the award-winning country wedding destination Barn at Boxgrove Farm, this dynamic duo recently launched a brand-new premium offering for the eco-conscious traveller. With Rest, a testament to their dedication to showcasing the best of their hometown to travellers from near and far.

Inspired by his own deep connection to the property and driven by a love of the land, Ben considers Bathurst to be “the dark horse of regional New South Wales”.

“The fact that we are so close to Sydney gives visitors the opportunity to discover the road less travelled. Without having to go far,” he says.

“We want our guests to fully immerse themselves in the rhythm of rural life. When staying here, guests are encouraged to unplug, unwind, and appreciate the simpler things.

Whether it’s wandering through the vineyard, collecting fresh eggs from the barn or greeting our friendly livestock, guests have the freedom to explore the property and experience it just as we do.”

Perfect 3 Day Bathurst Itinerary Rest Private Escape

As a family-run retreat, Rest sets the bar high in Australia’s luxury travel scene, seamlessly blending opulence and eco-consciousness. Nestled amidst the serene countryside, its panoramic views and off-grid amenities, provide the perfect blend of luxury and sustainability

Featuring six eco-studios and one three-bedroom villa, (including fully accessible and pet-friendly options) Rest offers an authentic farm-stay experience with all the comforts of modern life.

It is architecturally designed to enhance natural ventilation. With the solar-passive cabins tailored specifically for eco-travellers and are completely off-grid.

Floor-to-ceiling windows also welcome an abundance of sunlight. Allowing guests to bask in the splendour of the big sky country, day or night.

The bathrooms boast a beautiful freestanding stone bathtub and a large rainwater shower for ultimate relaxation. And, it is equipped with a sleek kitchenette, energy-efficient appliances and a state-of-the-art outdoor BBQ.

Each cabin also features a plush king-size bed, adorned with organic linen, ensuring the perfect night’s sleep.

And, so, while the temptation to call it a night may be strong, we recommend tearing yourself away from your stay and heading for dinner at Church Bar. Housed in a former 1850s church school, this deceptively difficult-to-locate spot (follow the fairy lights)  is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and generous toppings. One of the most popular dishes, is the Mount Panorama pizza, featuring mixed garlic mushrooms, truffle oil and buffalo mozzarella. After all, did you really #VisitBathurst if you didn’t indulge in a slice dedicated to its most famous monument?

Brunch, bonfires and beyond

Start your day with sunrise views from your accommodation.

If you’re visiting on the first Saturday of each month, check out the Riverside markets. Held on the banks of the Macquarie River in Central Bathurst. Stock up on plants, jewellery, clothes and handmade trinkets.  And, tuck into the delicious offerings of a selection of food stalls. As well as a coffee cart serving some of the best sips in the Tablelands.  Alternatively, visit the Farmers markets (fourth Sunday of the month) – which showcase the Central West’s best food and produce. Including, locally extracted honey, organic veggies and sweet treats.

Otherwise, head into town and discover some of the boutiques and spa spots lining the town’s main thoroughfares. Such as Howick St, Russell Street, and Keppel Street. These include Dejorja & Co.

A triple-threat space that exudes a calm, relaxed, and inviting atmosphere, you’ll find three remarkable businesses within the one space. Firstly, there’s Dejorja Boutique & Homewares, offering affordable clothing and beautiful homewares to enhance your living space. Secondly, Florence Grace Floristry, where Leah, the lovely owner, works her magic with fresh and dried flowers. Lastly, The Crows Nest Cafe is a locally owned and operated establishment, placing a strong emphasis on fresh produce. And their delicious acai bowl, for example, is one of the best in town.

Hungry? Head to The Hub for brunch. The staff are friendly, the service is excellent and the menu heroes delicious, locally sourced ingredients. The Hub Brekkie bagel (featuring scrambled free-range eggs, dukkah garlic yogurt, and chilli butter) is particularly delicious. As is the sweet potato and haloumi salad.

 3 day Bathurst itinerary

As one of New South Wales’ oldest towns, there’s an abundance of colonial architecture to explore in Bathurst in the afternoon.

If you’re a history hound or culture queen, other sites to see include the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum and the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery

Begin at the former – a treasure chest of historical artifacts that boasts natural minerals, an extremely rare lizard embedded in amber and an unmissable standout – a 360 million-year-old fossil known as T-rex. The only one of its kind in Australia. Continue to explore the latter – which features a dynamic collection of work from local artists.

Come dusk, enjoy dinner at Bootleg Dining. This elevated Australian-Italian restaurant features hatted and Michelin-experienced chefs in the kitchen, and a perfect view over the town square. Followed by a cheeky ice cream from the quaint “Annie’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlour”.

Wrap things up by heading back to your accommodation.  If you’re brave, take a hot outdoor bath at Rest at Boxgrove and enjoy the view under the stars. Otherwise, build a bonfire in your private fire pit – the perfect spot to roast marshmallows and gaze over the stars of Wiradjuri Country.

The best of Bathurst bubbles

Keeping responsible drink-driving laws in mind, your final day offers the perfect opportunity to make the most of Bathurst’s central location by visiting one of the regional wineries or breweries that surround it. These include Winburndale Wines, a charming family-owned vineyard just a 25-minute drive away. With its picturesque setting and inviting cellar door, it’s an ideal spot for a wine tasting and leisurely picnic. If you’re interested, you can drop by on Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm. Or, schedule an appointment for Sundays (so check in before you pop in!).

Alternatively, consider a visit to Renzaglia Wines, renowned for its exceptional Bathurst wine selection. Awarded the prestigious James Halliday Dark Horse Winery of the Year Award in 2022, their cellar door offers tastings and cheese boards by appointment. Also, ensure to check availability before you go!

For those with a penchant for spirits, Grange Distillery is just a 20-minute drive away. This esteemed establishment crafts multi-award-winning gins and whiskeys on a heritage estate dating back to 1823. Owner Toby provides personalised tours followed by tastings, showcasing unique creations like the Rose Garden Gin made from petals grown on-site.

3 day Bathurst itinerary

If you’re up for further exploration, venture to historic Hill End, a scenic 50-minute drive away. This former gold rush town, now a remote National Parks heritage site, is beloved by Australian artists like Luke Scibarris. Don’t miss a visit to the iconic “The Royal” hotel for a laid-back experience in this charming locale.

Or, journey to Sofala, just 35 minutes from Bathurst. This quaint gold mining town boasts one of the region’s oldest pubs, “The Royal,” where you can enjoy a refreshing schooner alongside colourful local characters.

Finally, for a peaceful retreat, consider Wallaby Rocks, a 40-minute drive from Sofala. Tucked away by the Turton River, this pet-friendly camping ground offers a serene setting for a picnic and a swim, especially during the warmer months.

Accommodation at Rest at Boxgrove starts at $490 per night. Carousel readers can apply discount code Carousel15 for additional savings.
