The Skincare Secrets The Beauty Industry Doesn’t Want You To Know
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

With so much conflicting advice from the beauty industry out there, it can be hard to know if you’ve got the best routine to keep your skin in tip top condition.

The global skincare industry is estimated to be worth around $3.9 billion* dollars in Australia alone. That’s a lot of money from a lot of people investing in the welfare of their skin! Kate Morris, the CEO and founder of Adore Beauty, Australia’s leading shopping destination for beauty products and cosmetics, shares the secrets of skincare that the industry DOESN’T want you to know, to help demystify the process!

You can mix and match your brands

And you might even get a better result this way. When putting together your skincare routine, sales staff may have you thinking that you need to have all of your products from one range, or one brand, but that’s not necessarily true. Customise your skincare routine by understanding what ingredients work best with your skin type and taking it from there. For example you may find your skin responds best to a particular brand’s moisturiser, but perhaps a different brand’s serums might offer more targeted results for your concerns.

You don’t have to use a toner after cleansing

As long as you remove your cleanser properly! A toner is typically used to balance the skin’s pH levels and remove any excess cleanser. However many cleansers now contain properties to balance the skin’s pH; and if you use lukewarm water and a soft cloth to remove your cleanser completely, you can skip the toning step altogether.

The best anti-ageing product is sunscreen, not a serum

There is no anti-ageing product on the market as effective as using a sunscreen daily, particularly in the harsh Australian sun. 80% of visible skin ageing is the result of sun damage. One of the biggest myths out there is that you only need sunscreen for prolonged direct sun exposure. The truth is that sun damage can still result from just a few minutes here and there without protection – so you really do need to wear sunscreen 365 days a year. And don’t just rely on the SPF15 in your foundation; you need to apply at least half a teaspoon of sunscreen to protect your face, so sparingly applied foundation won’t cut it.

A high price doesn’t always equal better results

A high price product doesn’t always mean it will work better or have more of a particular active ingredient; in many cases, you may just be paying for a brand. The best advice here is to read the ratings and reviews from other customers. Many of the top-rated products on Adore Beauty don’t have fancy packaging or a big brand name. (That said, if you love a product for its luxurious packaging, there’s nothing wrong with that!)

Anti-ageing products do work… but not overnight

If it’s taken 40 years to create those wrinkles, they’re not going away in a week! There are anti-ageing products on the market that will work, and will reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but they do require some patience. You’ll need to use them for at least a few months before you see any real results.
