How To Pick The Right Lipstick Shade

Priceline conducted a survey with Australian women for their Beauty Of You campaign and have revealed that less than half (40%) of the female population aged 18-54 years old feel confident in the way they apply makeup, and only 48% feel confident they know which colours suit their complexion.

With lots of different products on the market with shouty marketing campaigns, I totally get why it’s so hard to buy the right one.

In addition, the highest levels of confidence in makeup application came from women between the ages of 45-49 years (83%), and 25-29 years (82%), while the lowest levels of confidence came from women between the ages of 50-54 years (45%), and 18-24 years (50%).

If you have fair skin

Fruity oranges or coral shades can make you look sickly, so go for anything with a blue or green base. Matte or glossy light pinks also work well for everyday wear. Try Covergirl Lip Perfection Lip Colour in Heavenly, $14.95; or Maybelline NY Color Sensational Lip Color in Red Revival, $16.95

If you have medium skin

Bright pinks and berry colours will look great with a medium skin tone. Or for a bold take, try a deep cherry red shade to add drama to your look. Try Rimmel London Kate Moss Lasting Finish Matte Lipstick in 106, $11.95; or Innoxa Classic Colour Lipstick in Grapefruit, $14.95

The Skincare Secrets The Beauty Industry Doesn’t Want You To Know

If you have olive skin

Accentuate your golden skin tone with either a blue or orange based lipstick – both undertones work well. Just avoid purple colours as it’ll just bring out the yellow in your skin, making you look sallow. Try L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Lip Colour in Orange Fever, $21.95; or Max Factor Colour Elixir Lipstick in Ruby Tuesday, $20.95

If you have dark skin

Lucky you – you get to pick from the full-colour spectrum! Pick a bright shade to make your smackers pop (pinks and oranges look awesome here) or try a caramel tone for something neutral to wear to work. Try Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick in Snapdragon, $23.95; or Bourjois Shine Edition Lipstick in 1,2,3 Soleil, $19
