Most makeup removers struggle when it comes to heavy dark eyes. Here, photographer, mascara addict and blogger behind Hipster Mum, Jade Warne, finds out how this one stacks up…

Neutrogena Waterproof Makeup Remover

What it does: Gently wipes away waterproof eye make-up without any tugging, pulling or stinging.

Scent: Fragrance-free

Key ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Water, Cyclohexathiane, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Benzyl Alcohol. Sodium Chloride, Dipropylene Glycol.Poloxamer 162, Tripotassium EDTA, Benzalkonium Chloride, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Potassium Phosphate, DipotassiumPhosphate.

Why we love it: Tay-tay rocks ‘em in Blank Space. Beyonce had her turn in Why Don’t You Love Me. And let’s not forget Gwyneth Paltrow famously sporting them through one of the most cringe-y speeches in Oscar history in 1999. I’m talking about mascara tears. Those streaky, messy, panda eyes pools that form under tired eyes weighed down with buckets of mascara, patches of pencil and streaks of liquid liner. And while I’m all for them in an artistic setting, I just don’t fancy them at home – after a shower or unwittingly scaring the kids. So when it comes to make-up remover, I’m after one thing: a great taste that really lasts. Joking! I just want it to remove all that fancy stuff without sloshing it around on my face or leaving a greasy residue of oil in its wake.

Turns out the Neutrogena Oil Free Eye Makeup Remover does all that – and gives you change from $20.

How to use it: Simply shake to blend the formula into a foamy, milky mixture. Apply with cotton pad on closed eyelids. Then gently rinse with warm water.

I’ve had no problems removing long-wearing products, but if you’re wearing a full eye of make-up, it never hurts to go back a second time and focus specifically on the waterproof mascara. It seems to take a little longer for the remover to breakdown waterproof mascara, so I press a cotton pad against the lashes for about 5-10 seconds and then move to the eyelid. I also like dipping a cotton bud in the formula and brushing it along the lash line to get every last trace of eyeliner off (it’s more effective than rubbing a cotton pad against the lash line, which can cause excess remover to get into the eye).

Bonus: it can also work to remove lipstick and lipgloss.

Price: $10.89

Stockists: Priceline and all good chemists.
