Instead of This … Try That – Natural Alternatives to Your Favourite Skin Care Ingredients

If your skin care shelf is filled with buzzy ingredients like retinol, hyaluronic acid, or ascorbic acid, you’re not alone. (And you probably have great skin!) However, while these powerhouse actives have long been the gold standard for glowing skin for their ability to deliver real results, they can sometimes come with not-so-fabulous side effects – think redness, irritation, or increased sensitivity. The good news? There’s a new wave of natural skin care alternatives stepping into the spotlight, offering similar benefits with a gentler touch. Whether you’ve got sensitive skin, are navigating pregnancy, or just want to take a more natural route, Maria Enna-Cocciolone CEO & Founder at Inskin.Co shares her four favourite feel-good swaps that don’t skimp on performance.

1. Instead of retinol … try bakuchiol

Retinol might be the queen of anti-ageing, but for some, it can feel more foe than friend – causing dryness, peeling, and irritation. That’s where bakuchiol comes in.

The Psoralea Corylifolia plant produces bakuchiol, which is often dubbed the “natural retinol alternative.” And, for good reason. It delivers similar benefits, like smoothing fine lines and improving skin tone, but without the harsh side effects. It’s also safe for sensitive skin types and can even be used during pregnancy – something retinol definitely can’t claim.

Bakuchiol is less fussy about timing. While experts generally recommend only use retinol at night due to sun sensitivity, you can apply bakuchiol morning and evening, giving you more flexibility in your routine.

2. Instead of hyaluronic acid … try tremella mushroom

We all love the plump, dewy skin hyaluronic acid brings, but if you’re looking to take your hydration game a step further, tremella mushroom might be your new favourite find.

This natural hydrator – sourced from the silver mushroom – is rich in polysaccharides that help prevent water loss, keeping your skin soft, bouncy and balanced. It also brings a unique twist to traditional hydration by packing a powerful antioxidant punch, which means it’s not just moisturising your skin, but protecting it too.

So if you’re chasing that juicy glow with a side of skin defence, tremella’s a top-shelf-worthy switch.

3. Instead of AHAs … try mango enzyme

Exfoliation is key to a smooth, glowing complexion, but alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) can sometimes leave skin feeling raw, especially if you’re using them too often or have a more delicate complexion.

Enter mango enzymes – a fruity, vitamin-rich alternative that offers gentle exfoliation without the sting. These enzymes break down dead skin cells with less risk of irritation, making them ideal for regular use even on sensitive skin. Plus, they’re bursting with skin-loving vitamins A and C, which help brighten, renew, and protect the skin’s barrier. Think of it as exfoliation with a side of nourishment.

4. Instead of ascorbic acid … try Kakadu plum

Vitamin C is a brightening superstar, but its most common form – ascorbic acid – can be a little too zesty for some skin types. It’s also notoriously unstable, losing its potency when exposed to air or light.

Kakadu Plum and Davidson Plum extracts offer a more gentle, natural form of vitamin C that’s rich in antioxidants but far less irritating. Native to Australia, these superfruits not only help fade pigmentation and boost radiance, they’re also deeply hydrating and soothing. And, unlike ascorbic acid, they’re more stable, meaning you’ll get longer-lasting results without rushing to finish the bottle before it oxidises.
