As Aimee celebrated her 40th birthday, she found herself standing at the beginning of a new chapter, not because her role as a mother had changed, but because she realised there was finally space to reconnect with herself as a woman again. And to kickstart her new chapter, she approached The Photo Studio Sydney.

“I think a lot of people put us in a box,” she says. “You’re defined by your age, or you’re defined by being a mum. But I feel like it’s time to challenge that.”

For Aimee, that challenge began with one simple word: Yes.

Not yes, because she felt completely confident. Not yes, because she knew exactly what would happen. Simply yes, because she wanted to see what was possible.

“I’ve realised that whenever I take opportunities, I get this feeling,” she says. “It’s this excitement, this adrenaline. And now I’m at a point in my life where I have the ability to say ‘yes’ to those opportunities”.

And extending her influencer work into the fashion arena, she needed a strong portfolio. That meant she would have to spend a day in front of the camera for a professional fashion photo shoot, something she had never experienced before. After calling The Photo Studio in Glebe, Aimee was assigned a stylist, given directions on putting her mood board together, and started to seriously think about what she had just committed to do, with a new agency on board!

“You would think because I am an influencer, I would be completely comfortable,” she laughs. “But this is completely different. This isn’t creating content at home. This is all about me, and that is quite confronting.”

Like many women trying something new, Aimee admits she almost talked herself out of it.

“I was definitely nervous. I kept wondering whether I had packed the right clothes, whether I would know what I was doing and whether I would feel awkward.”

But almost immediately, those fears began to dissolve.

“The second I walked through the door at The Photo Studio Sydney (studios also in Melbourne and Brisbane), I just felt comfortable,” she recalls. “Everyone explained what was going to happen before it happened. That made such a difference because I could actually relax.”

Between conversations with the stylist, moments in the makeup chair and stepping in front of the camera for the very first look, Aimee began reconnecting with something she hadn’t realised she’d been missing.

“It isn’t really about the clothes,” she says. “And it’s not about the makeup either. It’s more about finding that feeling again. That feeling of being alive.”

For ten years, motherhood has quite naturally been Aimee’s priority, so it’s refreshing to suddenly put yourself first again.

“I’ve spent so much of my life building confidence in my children,” she admits. “Encouraging them to be themselves and believe in themselves. I realised I probably needed to do that for myself too.”

It’s a moment that will resonate with countless women. So many spend decades nurturing everyone else’s dreams that their own ambitions quietly move to the bottom of the list.

Turning 40 has given Aimee permission to focus on herself again, and ask: “What do I want this next chapter to look like?”

By the end of the day, the photographs almost felt secondary.

“What I’ll remember isn’t actually standing in front of the camera,” she says. “It’s how I felt walking away.”

“I remember saying at the beginning of the day to the team at The Photo Studio Sydney that I was chasing a feeling.”

“By the end of the shoot, I’d found it.”

Aimee describes her photoshoot as giving her an adrenaline rush that she hadn’t experienced in years because it reminded her who she is again.

“I honestly don’t remember ever feeling this confident growing up,” she reflects. “It’s funny because I think I have more confidence now than I’ve ever had in my life.”

Listening to Aimee, it’s obvious that this is really more a story about identity than a photoshoot. It’s also about motherhood and about giving yourself permission to be you again.

Before we finish our conversation, I ask Aimee what she hopes other mums juggling school lunches and work emails, like her, will take away from her story.

“I just want women to stop waiting,” she says. “Do the thing that scares you. Say ‘Yes’ to the next challenge you face. “Become the person you want to become, not the person someone else expects you to be. Too many times we don’t realise how the people close to us are the ones who define who they think we are, and sometimes we just roll with it and become that person, rather than stand up and say ‘Let me be bold, let me be true to me, I have a voice to share.’ ”

“I was curious to see the mood board, and wow, it was amazing. Raw, textured, yet simple. The final photos are stunning. Perhaps the greatest gift we can give ourselves isn’t just confidence, it’s permission. Because as Aimee proves, your most exciting chapter isn’t only in your twenties, it can be the moment you turn 40.
