If you’re a regular at your local hair or beauty salon, it’s no secret that these spaces are more than just places for pampering. They’re sanctuaries where self care meets community connection. However, recent findings by salon software company Timely reveal that many beloved beauty businesses are facing major challenges, from rising operational costs to time management pressures that make it difficult to provide the stellar service you’ve come to expect.

The Timely survey highlighted the struggles of thousands of salon owners across Australia and New Zealand – with factors like increasing rents, wages, and razor-thin profit margins impacting their ability to thrive. According to Ursula Von Keisenberg, Managing Director of Timely ANZ, “Customer satisfaction remains at the heart of what they do. Our owners said they want to spend more time ensuring their clients leave their salon feeling amazing.” Unfortunately, this passion often comes up against the practical limits of time and resources.

This is something Amy Hembrow, entrepreneur, influencer, Timely ambassador and owner of SSKIN Cosmetic and Skin Clinic, understands all too well. Alongside creating content for her 268,000+ Instagram followers, Amy has embraced the concept of creating a full experience in clinic for clients – from the warm welcome at the door to the aftercare that follows. As a business owner in the beauty industry, Amy believes that reputation and client loyalty are everything. However, with over 29% of salon owners expressing concerns about financial security, it’s clear that it takes a community to keep these businesses thriving.

So, how can you help support your favourite beauty business?

  1. Book ahead online. Many salons now use online booking systems. And so should you! This not only makes it easier for you to schedule appointments but also helps salons manage their time more efficiently. Timely’s survey revealed that businesses using online booking systems are 14% more booked than those without.
  2. Be flexible and understanding. Salon owners often juggle a lot behind the scenes. Showing understanding when there are delays or unexpected schedule changes can go a long way in supporting your favourite salon.
  3. Show loyalty with reviews and referrals. Leaving positive reviews and recommending your favourite salon to friends or family members can help boost its reputation and attract new clients.
  4. Embrace automation for convenience. By embracing online booking and automated communication tools, you’re helping salon owners reclaim valuable time. This can ultimately enhance the quality of service you receive. Supporting businesses that invest in technology isn’t just about convenience – it’s a way to help them thrive.

With challenges mounting, Amy and other salon owners rely on loyal clients to help sustain their businesses. As Amy says, “We’ve had to think creatively to find and attract new clients.” And, that creativity, combined with client support, keeps their doors open. Something to consider when you imagine a life without your monthly manicure or lash lift, perhaps … ?
