Are Run Clubs Still Having a Moment?

With next month’s City2Surf quickly approaching, Aussies of all fitness levels are dusting off their Dunlops and preparing to tackle the 14km course from Sydney CBD to Bondi Beach by foot. So, if you’ve ever considered joining a run club, the time is now.

However, according to new research, some of us are taking the sport a little too seriously. With over half of Aussies admitting their friends have become very serious about running in the past few months . 20% revealing that their running pet peeves are when people upload their Strava run to Instagram . And, 41% of Aussies agree they wouldn’t join a run club if they were new to running as they feel everyone at a run club is very serious about running

So, have run clubs, well, run their course? According to running expert Andrea Doney (known affectionately as “the Slow Coach”) the phenomena that took the world by storm in Summer still makes sense in Winter. You just have to tread with caution to ensure you don’t end up taking it all too seriously. And, completely take the fun out of your favourite run.

Why did run clubs become so popular?

Reflecting on the factors contributing to the rise of run clubs, Andrea points out that the COVID-19 pandemic played a significant role. “Running became popular because it was practical, safe, had a low barrier to entry. And, its benefits were quickly noticeable,” she explains. Beyond practicality, Andrea highlights the social aspect as a major draw. “People enjoy meeting like-minded individuals, fostering friendships and even romances, and replacing screen time with real-life connections.”

Advancements in technology, particularly fitness tracking apps like Garmin and Strava, also played a role in the growth of run clubs. “These apps appeal to a runner’s competitive spirit and provide real-time data that can enhance training,” Andrea explains. However, she advises balance, noting that while these tools are useful, disconnecting from them occasionally is essential.

All about inclusivity

But, are run clubs accessible to everyone? According to Andrea, it depends on the club. “Some cater to seasoned runners, while others embrace walkers and runners of all levels,” she notes. Inclusivity, she believes, is fostered through welcoming newcomers, using inclusive language and imagery and ensuring everyone feels valued. Regardless of their pace or experience level.

Community camaraderie is key

One of the standout features of run clubs is their ability to create a sense of community. “Participants not only run together but also engage in local conversations, celebrate each other’s successes, and support one another through challenges,” says Andrea. Running in a group can also enhance motivation and accountability, encouraging members to push themselves further than they might alone.

Motivation for movement

How do run clubs help individuals stay motivated. Particularly as the temperature drops? Andrea emphasises the importance of social support. “Starting each session with a quick chat about progress and achievements keeps members engaged and motivated,” she says. Celebrating milestones and even failures together creates a supportive environment where every effort is valued.

So, you want to join a run club?

Need a little extra incentive to get yourself over the proverbial finish line of joining a run club, so you can show off your efforts the World’s Largest Fun Run (or stroll!)? This year, Allen’s, alongside TV personality Laura Byrne, is searching for Official Allen’s Party Mix Mascots to participate in the City2Surf. The task: Dress up as one of Allen’s Party Mix’s iconic lollies – including Snakes Alive, Frogs Alive, Milk Bottle, Peaches & Cream, Banana, Black Cat, Strawberries & Cream or even a Jelly Baby. And, you’ll be in with a chance of scoring complimentary entry to this year’s race, a hamper filled with sugary treats, and a voucher to cover the entry fee for their next running race. A sweet spot if you like lacing up your sneakers, but also love a sneaky lolly, no?

As Laura says, “We can’t all be Cathy Freeman or Nedd Brockmann. But, why not pounce on Heartbreak Hill and leap over the City2Surf finish line for the sake of good fun! Or, better yet, encourage a mate who’s become a wee bit too serious about their running… we’ve all got one!”
