Reports suggest that the glamour couple were fighting for months over where to raise their two-year-old son Maceo.
Others say that Halle, 49, didn’t see eye-to-eye with the Revenge star about a lot of things, including whether they should live in Los Angeles or Paris.
“They’ve had many issues,” said a well-placed source.
“They both have fiery personalities and don’t like to compromise. Halle has threatened to file for divorce several times after arguments.”
The marriage reportedly fractured after they hit a ‘breaking point’.
Hollywood reports claim they had been fighting over a January incident at Los Angeles airport where Olivier allegedly hit an airport employee with a car seat, pushing him to the ground.
Halle and her son were also there. A $5 million lawsuit was filed mid-October against both Halle and Olivier for the attack.
“They’re just very, very different people,” said a report. “He’s a very macho guy, and things just didn’t jive.”
The Oscar winner was legally blocked from moving to France three years ago with her seven-year-old daughter Gabriel Aubry.
But Olivier, 49, who famously dated Kylie Minogue from 2003 to 2007, has continued to divide his time between both countries.
“It was a challenge to meet each other’s needs and be on the same team. They have a lot of differences culturally and as far as lifestyle goes.”
Other reports suggest that the couple have essentially been separated for several months, but were making last-ditch efforts to patch things up for the sake of Maceo.
In their joint statement the two said: “It is with a heavy heart that we have come to the decision to divorce. We move forward with love and respect for one another and the shared focus of what is best for our son.”
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Halle has a fortune of around $80 million. However, she and Olivier both signed a prenuptial agreement prior to their marriage.
Sources also said that Halle isn’t asking for joint or primary custody, but rather “what is in the best interests of the child”.
This will be unlucky-in-love Halle’s third divorce and Olivier’s first. In 1993 she married baseball player David Justice but they split just four years later.
Halle married again in 2001, but sent Eric Benet packing in 2005 after he underwent treatment for sex addiction.
