Author. Actor. Newly announced Ambassador of globally recognised hair salon brand. Is there anything former Miss Universe Australia Maria Thatill can not do? Based on the debut of her latest look – a new do that took her from brunette to blonde, the answer is an emphatic no! But if you’re credentials don’t include easy access to a superstar stylist, the good news is that you can still make the move to the light side with a few hacks.

Prepare your hair

Before jumping into the dye, it’s crucial to assess your starting point. Schedule a consultation with a professional colourist to evaluate your hair’s current condition and discuss your desired blonde shade. They’ll help you understand the process and set realistic expectations for your hair type. Healthy hair is key to a successful blonde transition. A few weeks, or even months, before your appointment, pamper your locks with deep conditioning treatments and avoid heat styling to ensure your hair is in its best shape for the transformation.

Enlist an expert

For the fastest and safest transition, a professional colourist is your best bet. They can handle the delicate process of lifting your brunette colour and applying blonde tones. Look for a stylist experienced in lightening darker hair, and be clear about your goals. Maria used Wella Professionals and hair colourist Maria Uva (who has also worked her magic on Gigi Hadid, Delta Goodrem and Dua Lipa).

Throwing shade

Blonde isn’t one-size-fits-all. From warm golden tones to cool platinum, the right shade for you will depend on your skin tone and personal preference. Your colourist can guide you in choosing the perfect blonde that complements your features and lifestyle. Marie gave Maria’s strands a warm blonde hue by using a mix of the Wella Illumina and Wella Blondorplex 9 dyes.

Slow and steady

The transition from brunette to blonde typically involves lightening your hair in stages, especially if you’re aiming for a light shade. This may involve a combination of bleach and toners to achieve the desired colour. Be prepared for multiple sessions if you’re making a significant change. Ideally, these should be spread out over several months. But a good colourist can guide you through the process in less time.

Tip: To minimise damage, opt for a high-quality, gentle bleach and consider treatments designed to protect your hair during the process. Marie tended to Maria’s tresses TLC combined with the Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Miracle Rescue and the Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Protect Leave-in .

Make maintenance your mantra

Finally, once you’ve achieved your blonde hair, maintaining it is crucial. Use colour-safe, sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners to keep your blonde looking vibrant. Purple shampoos can help combat brassiness and keep your blonde cool and fresh. Blonde hair can be also more prone to dryness and damage. Incorporate weekly deep conditioning treatments and leave-in conditioners into your routine. Products such as the Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Shampoo and conditioner can protect your hair from excessive heat and sun exposure to preserve its health and colour.
