For years, solid shampoo bars were the earnest but average achievers of the hair care world – eco-friendly, well-intentioned, but often a little lacklustre in performance. They promised clean, green beauty but delivered flat, waxy strands and the faint scent of disappointment – usually with a side of patchouli – in knowing your good intentions weren’t being rewarded in the mirror.

Well, we’re here with some tea … and a cookie … Or, Cooki Hair Care, to be exact – a brand that’s flipping the script on shampoo bars. In fact, with over 5,000 gleaming five-star reviews and more than 50,000 orders shipped, this Sydney-born brand is proof that “low tox” can be every bit as indulgent as the most luxe bottled formulas.

Their secret is shampoo and conditioner bars that look chic, smell divine, and lather like a dream – all without the SLS, parabens, PEGs, phthalates, silicones, synthetic fragrance or palm oil. Instead, a coconut-derived sulfate delivers a rich, satisfying foam that leaves hair clean, light and bouncy, with no heavy residue in sight.

From health scare to hair care hero

Cooki’s story begins with co-founder Jaimee Vilela, a former magazine beauty insider with a taste for the finer things. At 33, a diagnosis of Stage four endometriosis prompted a deep dive into low-tox living, stripping inflammatory chemicals from her beauty and household products. But one switch proved the hardest: hair care.

“I loved my high-end products, but I wanted something that felt just as luxe, smelled amazing and looked beautiful in my bathroom,” Vilela recalls. “Finding natural hair care that actually worked was almost impossible.”

So, she created her own. The result was a range of solid bars that delivered on every front – performance, scent, aesthetics – while being featherlight and travel-friendly. “I always joke, I don’t even care if you use my bars – just get a shampoo bar for travel and you’ll never have a shampoo explosion in Sicily again. Once you go bar, you never go back.”

A bar for every strand

Part of Cooki’s allure is its versatility. There’s a formula for every hair type and concern: Peppermint for dandruff or psoriasis, Purple Toning for blondes and greys, Ginger for thinning hair, and Argan for dry, curly or mature hair. Each bar lasts as long as three 200ml bottles, making them as economical as they are effective.

And, this is more than a niche online hit. In just 18 months, Cooki’s orders have grown 15-fold. This September, the brand will step into 100 Go Vita destinations and more than 300 independent health boutiques across Australia, bringing its cult-favourite bars to even more bathrooms.

Sustainability with style

Of course, beauty is no longer just about what’s in the bottle – or, in this case, what’s not. Cooki’s zero waste, plastic-free packaging has already saved over 300,000 bottles from landfill and oceans. The bars are cruelty-free, vegan and shipped from their sunny Sydney HQ, keeping the brand’s footprint refreshingly local.

Cooki proves that the smallest product in your shower can make the biggest impact – on your hair, your beauty routine and the planet. In a category once written off as worthy-but-dull, this brand has set a new standard for what solid hair care can be. High-luxe. Low-tox. And, a seriously smart cookie!
