Are We The World’s Best Sleepers, Or Just The Most Exhausted?

At Sydney’s Centennial Parklands this week, I interviewed Dr. Rebecca Robbins, Harvard Sleep Scientist and Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School, to mark the launch of the ŌURA ANZ: State of Sleep Report 2026.

The data reveals a fascinating paradox for Australia and New Zealand. While we lead the world in sleep duration, the report suggests we are struggling to actually recover.

The ANZ Sleep Snapshot:

  • Duration Leaders: New Zealanders (7h 11m) and Australians (7h 9m) are officially the world’s longest sleepers.
  • The Early Bird is Real: We are the world’s earliest risers. 43% of Aussies and 39% of Kiwis have morning chronotypes—the highest percentage globally.
  • The “Recovery Gap”: Despite long nights, Australians have the world’s lowest daily Restored time. We average 107 minutes of physiological stress with only 55 minutes of recovery during the day.

In our conversation, Rebecca highlighted that sleep duration alone doesn’t tell the full story. If we don’t manage stress or take “restorative pauses” during the day, the body carries that load into the night.

The report proves that recovery is a 24-hour equation. While we are biologically driven to be alert early, the lack of daytime rest remains a critical hurdle for our overall health and well-being.

ŌURA Ring 4 and ŌURA Ring 4 Ceramic are available to purchase in Australia and New Zealand through the ŌURA website: ouraring.com.
