Channel 9’s Today Extra asked me those same questions recently, and here is what the latest research about the most wanted items on eBay is telling us.

Ebay’s Most Wanted: What The Latest Research Reveals2

Fashion

A handbag sells on eBay every two minutes in Australia. We Aussies love our brands so if you have items that are gathering dust you might want to move them on and bank the cash. The Aussie fashion brands most searched are Country Road, Zimmerman, Kookai and Witchery to name but a few.

Toys

Once your littlies are done playing with toys, rather than hoard them in the garage, list them on eBay. You will be surprised what the top searched key words are for “preloved” items. If you still have the packaging expect even a better sales result.

Some of the top items that are in demand right now on eBay Australia are:

  • Thomas the Tank Engine
  • Beanie Kids
  • My Little Pony
  • Pokemon

No surprises that Pokemon is trending on the most wanted lists.  It is a great example of how to take advantage of what is all the rage. Pokémon Go has been sweeping across Australia and the rest of the world. Even if you have some old Pokémon goodies, you may want to get them up on eBay to make the most of this latest craze.

Collectibles

Coins are trending and the silver coins in particular. A friend of mine in the US, when visiting Australia just about bought the Mint out of silver coins. He has a massive eBay coin business in the US and knew he would quadruple his investment when he got home. The same is true in Australia, coins are trending but they are not the only collectibles on the most wanted list.

Other interesting trending items are:

  • Lego sets, especially the older sets
  • Die cast vehicles, such as Hot Wheels
  • Action figures like Star Wars – always Star Wars… it is a staple! A Star Wars figure sold in January for $15,000
  • Radio control cars

Yes, even the men are shopping their way through eBay feeding their hobbies. I was speaking with a gorgeous man today who was telling me how he buys movie memorabilia online. I couldn’t help myself, I suggested he use his knowledge to also sell items. His eyes lit up. It is a great way to financially support your passions and hobbies.

Vinyl is certainly doing well online. Remember you can bundle several LP’s of the same artist together to make a more attractive bundle. Of course, do your research and check what items are selling for. This will help you set the price before you list. If you have Beatles or other hard to find albums, they will certainly reap some rewards. But you can do well with a cleverly bundled group of LP’s too.

Technology

Most people immediately think of selling new technology when considering selling on eBay. Surprisingly, one of the trending categories is RetroTech.  The nostalgia for our technology of the past kicks in and as they say in the classics – Everything old is new again! Cameras both film and polaroid are being snapped up. Music players like ipod first generation are selling for around the $200 mark.  The limited edition versions like the U2 Ipod are selling for thousands.
