With super high protection and a lightweight texture, we had to try out Neutrogena’s facial sunscreen.

Here, Sharon Farrell of ‘Sharon The Makeup Arist’ trials Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Face Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+ and shares her verdict…

Sunscreen should be part of everyone’s daily skincare routine because we all know just how harmful the sun’s rays can be. With my fair Irish skin I’m always on the lookout for something new to try and thought I would give the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Face Sunscreen Lotion SPF50+ a go.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer High SPF

Product: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Face Sunscreen Lotion SPF50+

What it does: Keeps skin protected from harmful rays with an incredibly high SPF50+ and a water light texture, all while keeping skin matte and shine free.

Scent: Reminiscent of sunny days luxuriating at the beach.

Key ingredients: Octocrylene and Octyl Salicylate provide UVA/UVB protection with a water resistant finish, while Neutrogena’s own Helioplex technology stabilises the formula, increasing the effective wear time of the product.

Why we love it: Sunscreen. Bleaugh. It’s like the skincare equivalent of a kale smoothie. We know it’s good for us and should have one every day, but do we ever actually enjoy it?

As a pale freckle spattered Irish girl with a crippling phobia of wrinkles, administering white sticky goop that pretty much guarantees my make-up only sticks around for an hour has been a frustratingly frequent part of my skincare routine. And facing into Summer again soon I’m dreading the sunscreen induced breakouts I’ve become accustomed to acquiring every year.
Over the years I have become quite the connoisseur when it comes to SPF. I’m that girl at the beach, slip-slap-slopping every five minutes, cowering under the parasol in my rash vest and comically large sun hat. I am constantly on the search for the perfect sunscreen. My criteria is a super high SPF, lightweight oil-free texture and no shine please!

Enter Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Face Sunscreen with SPF 50+ (queue angels singing Hallelujah). This stuff is the bomb-dot-com (yes I just said that). Let’s go back to my criteria for the perfect sunscreen for a sec;

● Super High SPF – Check! With a whopping SPF 50+ this lotion offers awesome defence. Not only that, but Neutrogena has developed this rather clever technology called ‘Helioplex’ which stabilises the active sunscreen ingredients, meaning they don’t degrade as quickly as other brands (so you don’t have to reapply as often, woohoo!)

● Lightweight Texture – Check! The milky fluid consistency feels light as a feather on the skin and glides on in seconds. No vigorous rubbing or pulling on that delicate visage.

● Shine-Free Finish – Check and Check! Drying down to a completely transparent matte finish, this leaves a perfect (and undetectable) base for makeup that doesn’t end up creating the dreaded swamp face. Win!

Also I must admit I’m a big fan of the squeezy bottle packaging, it’s perfect for throwing in your beach bag and easy to dispense when you’ve got slippery sunscreen coated fingers. And the scent! One sniff and I’m back at Jervis Bay panned out on the sand, trying my utmost to keep every inch of my skin out of the sun. Ah memories.

How to use it: Sunscreens are most effective when applied directly to clean skin so before you moisturise squeeze about a teaspoon amount into your hand and apply liberally to your face, neck and décolletage 15-20 minutes before sun exposure. Don’t forget your ears!
