Whitney Port Shares Her Best Beauty Advice

I started learning about beauty just from my Mum. I am one of five kids – where four of us are girls. Beauty was always a thing in my household and I shared my bathroom with two of my sisters.

My older sister loved makeup. Whenever a new thing would come out she would go out and buy it, and she had so much she hardly ever used it. It was like a collection for her and she loved glitter. My sister once wore a smoky eye and a nude lip and my mum called it the gothic look and her dad made her take it off before going to school. Which is weird seeing as they are so liberal.

I also let my sister bleach my hair when I wanted to be super blonde, and I asked her to leave it on for 10 extra minutes… after that, my hair was bright orange. I had to get it professionally fixed and will never again do that.

We all started caring about beauty from a young age only because we didn’t have good skin. Genetically we all had pretty bad acne so it forced us to really care about our skin and try to take care of it. At school we were allowed to wear makeup, but it was mainly about wearing foundation. I was constantly trying to cover up my skin. To fix the issue, I started getting monthly facials and went to see a dermatologist and then started taking medication and that cleared it up.

Growing up, my best friend was always obsessed with Kate Moss, and I tried to find a model that I loved. I chose Amber Valletta and also I loved Christy Turlington – she’s effortlessly glamorous and embraced the ageing process.

My signature look is pretty natural. I use a tinted moisturizer which I mix with my regular moisturizer. I use an eyebrow pencil to brush up my eyebrows and eyebrow gel to keep them in place because I have sort of crazy eyebrows. I use a cream blush which I can use on my lips as well with a little Chapstick or gloss on top and then I curl my lashes… and that’s it. I keep these products in my makeup bag too, along with Lucas Papaw Ointment, I love it, it is good for everything.

My best beauty tip is to keep your eye cream in your fridge. I don’t know if it does anything but it feels so nice. I always feel as though my eyes are so puffy and gross in the morning. It is really refreshing.

If I could invent a beauty product, it’d be a cream that actually takes away your smile lines. That is the spot on my face I am most insecure about. It is obviously just a product of ageing and smiling though.

I grew up in a fashion household – my Dad manufactured clothing and my Mum was an art teacher. So I feel like I had the creative side from my Mum and the business side from my Dad.

The turning point in my career was when I decided to start my own collection, and a lot of answers came to me. I have worked in many facets of the fashion industry; on the editorial side, on the PR side. Then I realised the thing I wanted to do was to create.

The best part about having your own clothing label is having a new wardrobe every season! It’s also great to allow people to express their personalities through fashion. It is so fun to see girls feel confident in my clothes and to feel empowered in them. And to see girls actually appreciating it and wearing it.

The other thing I am working really hard on is my own website. It is a really fun project for me and I’m learning so much too. It is full of all these little life hacks and tips.

Before I go out, I always decide on my outfit first, before figuring out makeup. I work with my family; I can go into work and not have to put on a full face. It is the same routine every day.

Some staples in my wardrobe are a black moto jacket, a pair of comfy Levi’s, ripped boyfriend jeans, some flats (I just got these really cute pointy-toed ones which I have been wearing with everything), a good pair of black sneakers, a good grey t-shirt.
