Diagnosis: a dry patch of skin

“There are a vast number of skin conditions and disorders that result in dry skin,” says dermatologist Dr. Nicholas Stewart from The Skin Hospital. “These include genetic conditions (icthyosis vulgaris), inflammatory conditions (eczema, psoriasis), infections (tinea) and systemic disorders (malnutrition).”

“Frequently however, dry skin is caused by simple over-washing (eg. long, hot, frequent showering) the use of harsh detergents and not applying a quality moisturiser.”

Solution:

  • Seek an opinion from your doctor who will diagnose your specific skin condition and suggest the best method for treatment
  • General strategies include avoiding over-washing, using soap-free pH-balanced gentle cleansers and applying a quality moisturiser
  • A fragrance, lanolin, cortisone and dye-free option to soothe skin instantly. Try Aveeno Dermexa Moisturising Cream, $19.99

Diagnosis: red and scaly skin

“Redness and scale on the skin generally indicates that the skin is inflamed,” continues Dr Stewart. “Other signs may include heat, swelling, cracking, oozing and crusting.  Often inflamed skin feels itchy, tight or painful.”

Solution:

  • Seek an opinion from your doctor or dermatologist who will diagnose your skin condition and suggest the best method for treatment
  • Avoid triggers, if relevant, such as hot water/over-washing, harsh detergents (soap, other chemicals in cleansers like preservatives and perfumes), clothing that prickles, allergies (dust mite, pollens, or animal hairs), sudden changes in temperature, stress, lack of sleep, and hormones
  • Short, wash with warm (not hot) water, no more than once daily and the use soap-free pH-balanced gentle cleansers
  • Liberal use of quality skin moisturisers (very frequent and in sufficient quantities)
  • Keep fingernails short to avoid skin damage from scratching
  • Use breathable clothing (eg. cotton) and avoid irritating fibres (eg. wool) and remove tags that can irritate the skin
  • Treat active inflammation early.  Consult your doctor or dermatologist for a specific management plan
  • This barrier cream works to improve the area immediately. Try QV Flare Up Cream, $12.75

Diagnosis: itchy and pink sensitive skin

“Itchy, pink and sensitive skin also suggests inflammation.  It is important to consult your doctor to diagnose your skin condition and suggest the best method of treatment.”
