Whether you’re at the baby-step phase of getting fit – or you’re an all-out gym junkie, there’s one equalizing factor for all exercise enthusiasts – it’s a sweaty, messy business when you’re done.

So what’s the best post-workout hygiene regime? Well it definitely includes a shower and a spritz of deodorant of course but there’s more to personal hygiene than you might think – and it begins before you even start your warm up!

Our Moral Maze panel comprising Dr Alia Nasser; Fitness, Lifestyle and Nutrition Coach Fiona Caddies, TheCarousel.com Contributing Lifestyle Editor Emma Markezic and our host, Psychologist Jo Lamble get into the essential dos-and-don’ts of personal hygiene for health enthusiasts.

Here are just some of their tips:

  • Your choice of work-out wear is vital. Always pick wicking fabrics and make sure the design is appropriate to your chosen exercise to avoid discomfort and friction.
  • Change out of sweaty workout gear as soon as possible – remaining in damp clothing can encourage fungal and/or bacterial growths.
  • Shower as soon as possible using a soap-free product such as Verona on sensitive skin. A lot of daily routines such as exercise can cause a pH imbalance in the vaginal area and soap will exacerbate this.
  • Dab your skin dry – don’t rub. And don’t share your towel with others.
  • Apply moisturiser to replenish dry skin.
  • Use deodorant under-arms to prevent odour caused by bacterial breakdown.
  • After showering, wear cotton next to your skin this will allow the skin to breath and dry completely after showering. Synthetic or tight underwear can affect the pH balance of your vaginal area.
  • Always wash exercise clothes completely between workouts and keep footwear well aired.
