The Skin Care Brand Rethinking What Eczema-Prone Skin Really Needs

Jacqui Vidal (main feature image) knows what it feels like when someone hands you a tube of cream and a promise that doesn’t hold up. She’s known it since childhood, when eczema first showed up on her own skin.

Similarly, when Vidal’s daughter developed severe atopic dermatitis in Year 6, nothing on the shelf seemed to help. So she did what a lot of parents in that position eventually do: she started making it herself.

A Frustration Twenty-Five Years in the Making

Around 1 in 5 Australians will experience eczema at some point in their life, and most of them will tell you the same thing Vidal did: it’s rarely just a rash. It’s sleepless nights, self-consciousness, the low hum of always managing something. Watching her daughter go through a version of what she’d lived through as a child wasn’t something Vidal could treat as a coincidence to shrug off.

“I wanted to make products and a brand that speak to the exhaustion and the emotional toll of trying to fix problem skin, not just the visible symptoms,” she says. “Watching my daughter go through so much of what I went through as a child made it impossible to ignore.”

That’s the part of Salvida’s origin story that doesn’t fit neatly into a product launch. It isn’t really about a gap in the market. It’s about a mother who spent a lifetime chasing skin care promises that failed her, refusing to let her daughter inherit the same disappointment

Building a Brand Around Proof, Not Promises

Most skin care brands ask you to trust the label. Vidal built Salvida around the opposite instinct.

“We could have asked people to trust us,” she says. “But when you’re formulating for skin that’s already been let down by other products, that’s not good enough. We wanted lab data and real households putting it to the test.”

So that’s what happened. Independent laboratories tested every product in the range, including a 30-person occlusive patch test that recorded zero irritation reactions, before Salvida handed the range to 172 real households for a four-week trial. The participants weren’t cherry-picked reviewers; Salvida recruited them specifically because they were already living with eczema, atopic dermatitis or sensitive, reactive skin, the exact audience the brand was built for. After four weeks, 88% said their skin looked or felt noticeably better, and 89% said they’d recommend Salvida to family and friends.

It’s a startlingly unglamorous way to launch a skin care brand: no dramatic before-and-afters staged for the campaign, just 172 households living their normal lives and reporting back on what actually happened to their skin.

A Routine Built for the Whole Household

Rather than building out a sprawling range of separate treatments, Vidal kept things deliberately simple: one routine, three products, designed to work for both kids and adults living under the same roof.

Barrier NPR+ is a water-free, zinc-and-oatmeal balm designed for skin that’s actively flaring, formulated without the sting that often makes consistent use difficult during a flare. It came out of the trial as the most-loved product in the range, with participants specifically calling out its texture and how easily it absorbed. Bodyguard is the daily moisturiser that steps in once skin has settled, a biome-supporting lotion meant to keep things hydrated between flares rather than after them. And Every Day, Everywhere rounds out the routine as an ultra-gentle wash that works for everyone in the house, not just the person whose skin needs the most attention.

Why the Proof Matters More Than the Pitch

For Vidal, the lab results and trial data were never the headline. They were the answer to a very specific kind of scepticism, the kind that builds up in anyone who’s spent years hearing that a product would help, only to watch it fail. Salvida’s dermatologist testing, Eczema Association of Australasia seal, and steroid-free, fragrance-free formulation are the credentials. The 25 years of lived experience behind them are the reason any of it exists at all.

It’s a familiar shape for a lot of the best skin care stories: not a brand built to chase a trend, but one built by someone who simply couldn’t find what she needed, and decided to make it for her daughter instead.
